Dear Mom,

Things haven't always been easy. There were a lot of nights that I woke you up, and probably more than a few when I kept you up with worry and apprehension. I've embarrassed you in public, and there were definitely times when I pushed you past your limits. Through it all, you've been strong, and gentle, and warm. You're not perfect, that we both know, but you are pretty incredible. I can't believe how lucky I am to have you as my mother. My world is a much better place because of you, and to prove it, here's a few things that you've taught me in your sagely wisdom.

1. Use your words.

Communication is necessary - no one is a mind reader. Describe your feelings with your words, don't just lash out and expect people to understand the cause.

2. Think before you speak.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" is a load of bologna. Be sure the words you use are necessary, and not hurtful reactions to anger or injury.

3. Apologize.

Inevitably, you'll mess up. Own your mistakes, and try to make things as right as possible.

4. Share.

Sharing is caring, people.

5. Don't let the possibility of failure scare you out of trying.

Thomas Edison once said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

6. It's okay to cry...

Let's be honest, sometimes tears have magical healing powers.

7. ...but don't let the world beat you down.

There's too much life to be lived to resist a little positivity every now and then.

8. Ice cream and chocolate are perfectly acceptable remedies for heartache.

The only sustainable solution for the world's troubles is frozen dairy and sweetened cocoa.

9. People are the worst - don't be too surprised when they hurt you.

And they smell like beef and cheese.

10. People are the best - don't forget that everyone has some good in their hearts.

It might be hard to find, but it's there!

11. Take care of yourself.

To be the best person that you can be, quality time recuperating from reality is necessary.

12. Be kind.

Think nice things. Say nice things. Do nice things. Especially to those who aren't particularly nice, they're in need of kindness more than most.

13. Don't worry so much.

Stress can be damaging to both your mental and emotional health. Plus, it doesn't help at all with actually achieving whatever you're stressing about.

14. Go outside and play.

Fresh air and sunshine can do wonders - go take advantage of them while you can!

15. Get enough to eat.

Being fueled by healthy, real food is essential. Try out new recipes and restaurants! Learn to be adventurous in the kitchen - sadly, cooking skills are waning in today's microwaved generation.

16. Get enough sleep.

You'll turn into a grouch without sleep, which no one really wants. Plus, a lack of sleep can make you more susceptible to stress, illness, and a case of the cotton-headed-ninny-muggins.

17. Be sure to exercise regularly.

No one wants your arms to pop off.

18. Surround yourself with people you love and people who love you.

Drama and falsity in friendships? Ain't nobody got time for that.

19. Remember your manners.

You weren't raised in a barn...unless you were. Even then, "please" and "thank you" are a must.

20. Be unapologetically yourself.

"Be who you are, and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Suess

Thank you, Mom. So very, very much.

Love,

Me

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
