The curse of Lil B. To some, this is unbelievable. To others, you may have no idea what I am talking about. However, to players of the NBA, the curse of Lil B is entirely real, just ask some of the players he’s cursed (James Harden and Kevin Durant just to start). Lil B is a rapper, commonly known as The BasedGod, and takes offense when people disrespect him. He takes credit for the “cooking dance” and curses those players he believes doesn’t pay him the respect for the dance, or to him in general. The curse takes effect immediately, and can seemingly last as long as he desires. Below, we will discuss a few players unfortunate enough to be cursed by Lil B.
Kevin Durant
In 2011, NBA superstar Kevin Durant tweeted about Lil B's popularity, and Lil B responded by "cursing" Durant that he would never win the NBA championship. That was not the end of the feud though, seeing as Lil B made a track called “F**k KD” and is seen on a TV commercial calling out Durant as well. It is clear to see this curse hasn’t been lifted off of KD yet, because he remains ringless, and is now under a new coach (our very own Billy Donovan). Maybe this will be the year he breaks the curse, but we’ll have to wait and see.
James Harden
During the Western Conference Finals of the 2015 NBA Playoffs, Lil B began questioning James Harden celebratory cooking dance (which he had done all season). Lil B called him out via Twitter claiming he should respond or be cursed. Lil B’s curse led to losses in both Game 2 and Game 3. Game 3 resulted in the Rockets losing to the Warriors with the score of 80–115, a true blowout (by 35, Durant’s number or coincidence?) After the Rockets practically handed over the series, Lil B was at Game 5. Finally, during this same game Harden set an NBA Playoff record with 13 turnovers, leading Lil B to publicly consider lifting the curse, since that embarrassment is curse enough.
Lebron James, Iman Shumpert, J.R. Smith, and Kyrie Irving
After sweeping the series against the Atlanta Hawks to reach the Finals, the Cavaliers celebrated in the hot tub and did what resembled to be the “cooking dance” that Lil B lays claims to. He went on to tweet out to them (below) but fear not, Iman saved the day. He tweeted back to Lil B, and Lil B wished the Cavs nothing but the best.
Marcus Speights
A former Gator, Marcus Speights now plays for the Golden State Warriors. In 2011, Speights tweeted that “Lil B is terrible.” Care to take that back now, Marcus? In the closing seconds of a third quarter Finals game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Warriors, Speights was wide open. He went on to blow a dunk completely unguarded, and many are quick to point out the Lil B curse. However, the worst part of the game? The Warriors went on to lose by 2, that has to hurt Speights somehow.
Despite all this, we still wonder today if the curse is real. I suppose only time will tell, and one day we may go on to see Durant hoist a trophy, or Speights to finish the play next time. The lesson learned though is respect your rappers, you don’t want to get on Lil B’s bad side.
