This year's edition of the Copa America is special. As some people may know, the Copa America is an international soccer tournament held every four years. This is a tournament that only includes countries of the Americas (South, Central, and North America and the Caribbean.) This includes two football federations, (CONCACAF and CONMEBOL) which is much like the UEFA Euro championship that includes all of Europe.
The last international soccer tournament was held in 2015, and Chile was deemed the victor.
So why are they playing the tournament again this year when it is normally held every four years?
The answer is in the name.
Copa America premiered way back in 1916. This being the 100 year anniversary of the tournament's inception. The previous 44 installments were all hosted by South American nations, but this year, the United States became the first non-South American nation to host.
Being the host, there were high expectations heading into the tournament for the United States. To most of their supporters, including myself, they hosted and played in grand fashion, winning their group and advancing all the way to the semi-finals.
However, they met the one obstacle they could not beat: Argentina. Led by the best player in the world, Lionel Messi, Argentina easily defeated the United States with a 4-0 win. Argentina and Chile both advanced to the final. While Chile is looking to repeat as champions, Messi is looking for his first major championship with his national team.
While everyone knows that soccer is not the most popular sport in America, I hope that after this tournament support will grow for our national team.Unlike other popular sports like football or basketball, soccer is not a sport played mainly for money.
It is played for national pride.
