When you enter college, you usually have a goal in mind. An ending, an understanding of exactly where you want to be in four years. However, things will often change. Sometimes, your major may turn out to be more difficult than you originally anticipated. You may wake up one morning and decide that becoming a doctor isn’t really your dream; just something you thought you would enjoy. Discovering what you really want out of college is just as vital a step towards your future as taking your MCAT or LSAT. Yet very often people have no idea what they really want from their undergraduate experience.
But that’s okay.
College is meant to help you find yourself. It’s meant to be a stage of your life where you learn about who you are, what you want, and ultimately what it is you are going to spend the rest of your life doing. It’s a stepping stone to your success. Yet success cannot arrive without failure. So don’t be afraid if you are having second thoughts or regrets. It’s only natural for you to question if you made the right choice because what you choose to pursue in college is one of the most important choices you will make in your lifetime.
People are going to be expecting a lot from you. Whether it's your family, friends, advisors, or a mixture of all three, you can’t always live your life trying to fulfill the expectations of others. You need to decide for yourself what is really worth pursuing and what you really want to do. Because no matter what other people may say, it is ultimately your choice to make.
So take your time. Explore your options; take a wide-array of courses that are all vastly different and allow you to try new things. Pursue what you are interested in and pursue things you may have never even considered before. The results of stepping out of your comfort zone will quite often be surprising. College isn’t the time for the defining factors in life; it’s the time for maybe, for why not. For going out of your way to give everything you can, a shot, and to learn what it is that really drives you. Because while you may only have a short amount of time in college, the choices you make here will define you for a lifetime.
