The 49s quarterback Colin Kaepernick willingly put himself into controversy at the last 49s pre season game last weekend. The player refused to stand up for the playing of the national anthem in protest.
His rezoning being “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder” said Kaepernick to the NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game.
Was Kaepernick correct? Absolutely not, however it was his way of expressing himself. To call him an un-American is wrong. He did not harm anyone or did anything to directly disrespect anyone. All he did was express his anger through a better way than social media.
After all that has happened and all the deaths that have been swept under the table after a couple of days social media has not worked. Instead of putting his opinion on social media and trying to express and get people’s attention that way like everyone has tried and failed. He chose to do that at a game without telling anyone, or involving anyone in it.
At his own risk, Kaepernick chose to to put himself out there knowing he would be judged and criticized by many people. And for that I do respect him.
