Last Monday, September 12th, Instagram CEO and Co-founder Kevin Systrom announced the new keyword-based blocking that is being added to Instagram so users can avoid insulting or triggering words appearing on their posts. Systrom explained the feature as the first step, so more can be expected; but to start is a new keyword moderation option that allows any user to choose a list of words (or use defaults provided) that are offensive to them so any comments with those words in the future will be hidden.
This feature adds to tools already in place to report or block certain accounts or simply delete comments, now it’s possible to avoid the negative comments in the first place.
In his announcement, Systrom explained the reasoning behind the move in a heartwarming statement that revisited the original goal of Instagram as an online community for people to share their experiences and their life with other through pictures.
“Images have the ability to inspire and bring out the best in us, whether they are funny, sad or beautiful,” Systrom said in his statement.
Following, he mentioned his amazement as the size of Instagram's “community” grew to encompass 500 million users, but also he expressed his desire to keep the space of the site and application safe, even as it grew.
“We want to work diligently to maintain what has kept Instagram positive and safe.”
He touched on the wide diversity of backgrounds and the threat of negative comments, and most touchingly, on the need for change.
“To empower each individual, we need to promote a culture where everyone feels safe to be themselves without criticism or harassment...We know tools aren’t the only solution for this complex problem, but together, we can work towards keeping Instagram a safe place for self-expression.”
I applaud Systrom for taking action towards lessening the impact of hateful comments and hurtful words that are so often spread and sent through social media accounts like Instagram. So many young people every day are subjected to bullying through the social media accounts they use, but avoiding those accounts to avoid the abuse would isolate them. The conundrum leaves so many trapped and too many people, especially teenagers are driven to depression, self-harm, or suicide because of malicious online activity.
If enough major accounts follow Instagrams lead in bulking up options to avoid negative comments, effectively block attackers, and overall increase the positivity on social media to outweigh the negativity then we’ll be moving in the right direction combat a massive and growing issue.
To utilize this tool, tap the gear icon on your profile, then look for the “Comments” tool. Choose your own list of words or utilize the offered defaults. Either way, enjoy censoring the haters.
