For years, cheerleaders have been plagued with the same six obnoxious words: "But Cheerleading is not a sport." Cheerleaders have both figuratively and literally jumped through hoops to prove to the rest of the athletic world that they are indeed athletes. Not only does competitive cheer require a huge amount of stamina, technique and strength, but it also requires grace, personality and entertainment. Anything that can combine that level of physical strength and entertainment goes down as a pretty difficult sport in my book!

First, let's start off with the argument, "If it's not in the Olympics it's not a sport." According to this reasoning, then football, mixed martial arts, cricket, baseball and softball (both added into 2020 Olympics) are not sports as of now. However, these hardworking athletes are never talked down on like cheerleaders are; their athleticism is never doubted. Come to think of it, what sets cheer apart from these other sports? Oh! That's right, femininity and grace are incorporated making this sport "girly" and "easy." However, if you have ever cheered you know that this sport is anything but easy.

Cheerleading consists of four parts: stunting, floor routine, jumping, and tumbling. Each of these components requires months, even years, of rigorous training to reach perfection. Conditioning and working out are a huge factor for cheerleaders and their competitions. In order to stunt (for example a pyramid, half, full, liberty etc.) correctly, all members of the stunt group must have strong muscles in their core, legs and arms. Without strong muscles, the stunt will most likely fail, bringing down the entire group and deducting points. Same goes for jumping and tumbling without the correct muscles cheerleaders would not be able to perform those awe-inspiring flips and twirls that get's the crowd going wild! Finally, the floor routine which is basically a dance that incorporates stunting, jumping, and tumbling. The routine usually goes on for about three minutes but it is constant movement and requires very high stamina. It usually takes months for cheerleaders to be able to perform this dance flawlessly and at the end, they are often still out of breath.

So now that the most popular argument against cheer has been proven invalid, you know how psychically demanding cheer is, and what it truly is about. Do you think cheerleading is a sport now?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
