When you don't have the cash for fancy face masks, a spa day, or the luxury of weekends off, finding the money and time to do a little self-care can be a daunting and often not accomplished task.
Here are a few cheap and easy tips that will make life just a little bit easier:
1. Carry a water bottle.
Staying hydrated is important for your physical health, but it also will keep you more focused and feel better throughout the day. Most schools and workplaces allow water, so this is an easy step to taking better care of yourself and keeping hydrated.
2. Try a new food.
Or a new brand you've been wanting to try. Or a new restaurant that you've been wanting to try. While you certainly won't be able to do this every day, or even every week, working in trying something new to your schedule will make life a little more adventurous.
3. Dance.
Whether it be in your bedroom while everyone is gone, in the kitchen while you're cooking dinner, or even in the car on your way to work; dancing can help you loosen up and help you have fun. Plus, it's free!
4. Help someone.
Hold the door for someone, help a friend move, or just do a small favor for your roommate. Helping someone doesn't usually take much time, is almost always free or cheap, and you have opportunities every day. Even just a small gesture, can help you feel better about yourself and you'll make someone else feel good, too!
5. Take the stairs.
Exchanging one elevator trip for walking up the stairs, will help you get in some exercise and may even lead to a longer-term change. It's a start and is helpful for those looking to getting into exercising routines.
6. Invest in a nice jacket.
Hear me out. Demin jackets are usually cheap (around $10-$30) and go with pretty much everything. It can make you look more put together and make it look like you put more thought into your outfit. Whether or not this is true, you can trick your mind into believing it's true, and when you wear something you like and feel good in it is one of the easiest ways to boost your mood.
7. Journal.
You don't need a traditional journal to do this. Simply keep a Word document on your computer and write whatever you want. It could be full of quotes you like, notes for work or school, or just rants you needed to get out somewhere. Placing your thoughts on paper can help you make sense of and organize them, which makes dealing with and accomplishing them much easier.
8. Compliment yourself.
This doesn't have to be you staring into the mirror and telling yourself affirmations out loud. It can simply be, "Wow, I did a really good job on that essay!" or "Hey, my hair looks really nice today!". Even if you just say them in your head, it's a step towards eliminating and controlling the negative thoughts we tell ourselves every day.
9. Create routines.
The easiest time to do this is in the morning and at night. Most of us usually already have some sort of a routine, but make sure to stick to it. Get up at the same time every day (unless you need to get up early), make sure to eat, and then get on with whatever else you do in the morning. The routine can be simple, but knowing you will be doing a few of the same activities every day at the same time, can help ground us in our busy lives.
10. Stand up for yourself.
This can be hard, especially if you're soft-spoken or not used to doing so but standing up for yourself often makes you feel better about yourself. Make sure to recognize your own worth and not just that of others.
11. Make time for the things and people you love.
Taking a few minutes to listen to your favorite song, read a chapter in the book you're reading, or watch a quick episode of an old favorite TV show is recharge time that everyone needs. Some days will be busier than others, but always prioritizing time for yourself can make these busy days just a little bit easier.
