Change. It is a 6-letter word that strikes anxiety and fear into the hearts of many. Some people say that the key to happiness is avoiding change like the plague. Some say the key is to welcome it into your heart like a Southern grandma at Thanksgiving. No matter how you think change fits into your life, one thing is for sure: all of us are a little scared of it, and maybe it's time we stop.
Change is a scientific, mathematical, phenomenon that shows growth in the world around us and in everyday things. Everything you see goes through change. The phone you use was once scrap material. The clothes you wear were once bare cotton or polyester. The river you swim in was once raining down on the earth in millions of drops. Change is constant and everliving. So why are people so afraid of it?
Realistically, change is scary for many reasons. Stability brings peace, whereas any change in your life can bring uncertainty. It can rock the boat. If things don't go right, you'll have to go back to square one, or sometimes, even worse. And this isn't in the cards for most people. Most of us, when we're planning for the future, don't like to imagine what might happen if something goes wrong. It feels like signing your will when you're five years old. But why does this instability have to be treated like a poisonous snake; something ready to lash out at us at any moment? Why, instead of being averse to this change, should we not do something more, something different?
Maybe--just maybe--instead of avoiding change, and avoiding what might happen, or what could possibly happen if this and this and this also happened--we should embrace that change and uncertainty. That's a really big thing to do. Embracing something so fragile and hard to comprehend, yet so important to our lives. So bear with me here. Let's start small.
Let yourself be open to something changing. Whether it's your hair, or a new phone case, or a new brand of toilet paper, be open to something in the world shifting its course, and changing the narrative. In order for life to offer you its biggest, baddest deals, you have to start at the bottom and move your way up. And eventually, things will become easier. Change will become less of an impenetrable structure that goes against you and more of a tool you can use to make your life better. This is not to say that life will be smooth sailing from here on out! Pain and sorrow will never leave our lives, but if we learn how to be open to it instead of reverting to running away from it, we will always learn infinitely more about ourselves and the world around us.
With this in mind, work every day to become a more open, positive person, no matter how positive or open you think you already are--there is always room for growth!
Go forth and work to make the world a better place. Spread peace and love. <3
