It’s been a week since the Super Bowl, and Cam’s still upset. But what else can we expect? In his first NFL championship experience after a near perfect season, he was the proponent of a lost world championship title. I would hope he’s upset.
After Cam his Super Bowl post-game interview, reporters commented, “He still has some growing up to do,” because he stood up and left the interview early. The reason that he said he was done with the interview was not because he was being disrespectful, but rather because there was a Broncos player being interviewed directly behind him. The player kept addressing Denver’s game plan to stop the offense and how they made it work. After losing a career-high game, how was Cam expected to sit and listen to another player remind him of how he hadn’t been able to pass the ball?
A few days ago, Cam posted a picture on his Instagram wearing shirt that read, “I win my way.” He is posed in front of a picture of Muhammad Ali, a celebrated boxer and champion of an individual sport. Cam was criticized because it appeared he was commenting that he was like Ali and could win the sport on his own, his way. Football is inherently different from boxing—one person versus a team of eleven—and Cam is not arrogant enough to think that he would be able to take on a game alone.
There has never been a quarterback like Cam; there has never been someone who has had the success that he’s had playing the position the way that he has. There was no egotistical malice behind his comment; instead, he was making a statement about how he will not change the type of quarterback that he is or the way that he plays the game, even though he lost. He is going to stick to the tradition of who he is, and isn’t that why we fell in love with him in the first place?
In his most recent Instagram post, Cam comments on a picture of his son in between two post-season trophies, saying that his son is already growing up so fast. This is the first publicly posted picture of little Chosen Newton. It looks like Cam is thankful to be with his family after an awesome season while he prepares for an undoubtedly amazing season next year.
