Being a college senior with only a few months until I'm kicked into the real world made me realize that I am not the same person I was freshmen year. College changes you for the better, preparing you for the harsh reality that is life. One thing I learned on this journey is that a healthy relationship is key.This is why it is important to understand the difference between dating a man who is there for you or a boy that you constantly have to check up on. Freshmen year I would let boys walk all over me until I finally was fed up with all the lies. Each semester was a stepping stone for me to stand up for my feelings and find a man that lets me truly be myself! Once I found that man, he made me feel a million times better then any boy would. These are 15 Signs that I knew I was dating a man in my college years:
1. He supports your decision to go out for a sorority.
Ladies we need to teach these “boys” that being a part of a sorority does not mean you are “paying for your friends” or in a "blood joining cult". Joining a sorority as a freshmen allows us to build more friendships aside from the friends gained from the typical gen ed classes. When we wear greek letters across our chest, that does not automatically classify us as being “easy”. On the other hand, a man will never demean your character in relation to the organizations you join. A man will support your decision to join a sorority. He might even freakout more than you when you receive the bid from your top sorority, even if you talked his ear off for hours about the Alpha Sig girls. The moment I realized I was dating a man was when it came time to receive a little in my family. My man openly accepted the fact that my little called him dad and actually became just as protective of my little as I am!
2. He understands that girls night out on campus does not stand for cheating
We all know that College life is much different from our former high school years. This new found freedom gives us girls the chance to make unforgettable memories together! In order to have these memories you should never allow that “boy” you are dating to convince you that all your single girl friends are actually a devil on your shoulder. You know your girls better than he does and they would never influence or force you to flirt with other guys when they know you are in a relationship! News flash...girls despise other girls that cheat so why would our friends influence us to do so! Ladies take note, a man will verbally accept that you needed a girl nights with no accusations that you would ever cheat! He might actually be super excited to have some guy time for himself!
3. He includes you in his friendgroup
Now a days being able to get along with your bf/gf friends group is important. The way your significant other acts with their friend group can be the make or breaking point of the relationship. If your fella does not treat you the same way with his friend when you are alone then it is time to move on and get yourself a man! A man will continue to treat you as if you are the only person in the room while being the life of the party.
4. He will never use your past history against you
Our past makes us who we are today! A man will understand that he was not your first love or the one to take you to prom. He will be there through all the tears shed as a result of your family history resurfacing. Most importantly he will remind you that even though he wasn't there during these heartaches, he will be there for you now when it matters most!
5. He will not hit up another girl to hang one on one
There is no second guessing when you are dating a man. They will never jokingly flirt with a girl because let's face it ladies… there is no such thing as “jokingly flirting”. Dating a man allows you to be worry free knowing that they have your 100% trust and would never do anything to jeopardize your trust
6. He will never see your guy friends as a threat
A man will have no problem with you having guy friends because he knows how crazy you are about him. He will most likely end up becoming closer with your guys friends than you are. This relates back to number 3...
7. He accepts that homework dates occur often
Dating during college can be difficult. Trying to set time aside for dates and be on top of assignments is a true hassle. The best thing a man can do is accept that homework dates are the best way to spend time together AND finish up the numerous unfinished assignments. Being together does not always have to involve sex… but it could lol
8. He understands that yogas are essential to your wardrobe
Wearing yoga pants does not mean you are asking for it. You know you are dating a man when he compliments how good your butt looks in your yogas. He might have a problem keeping his hand off of you!
9. He does not require you to hang 24/7 on school breaks
Hanging 24/7 is not required when you date a man. You both see each other everyday at school and breaks give us ladies time to miss our man. We both have families at home that much rather see more of our face then us sucking face!
10. He gets it when plans are canceled when a friend needs you
Our girlfriends are there for us through every break up or emotional break down. It's only right that we drop what we are doing to assure they are comforted. A man will understand if you have to cancel your plans when your friend is hurting, even if your plans were made weeks in advance.
11. He loves when you dress sexy on the weekends or out to the bar
A man will never tell you to change your clothes. He will be the guy at the bar saying “Yeah that’s my sexy girlfriend”. Ladies, make sure you hold on to a man that does this! Your confidence level will be through the roof!
12. He is willing to fix things that bother you
Yes, there will be times that your relationship is rocky. This is when your man will do everything in his power to fix things with you! We all know that guys love their games, a man will be able to turn off his games if it is something that bothers you. This also means that he will not get angry with anything that you bring up to him. Talking is better than walking away.
13. He knows when you are overwhelmed with school
With the numerous assignments and projects in college, a man will be there to take the weight off your shoulders in any way. Even if it means folding your laundry or giving you the space you need to get the work done. But once you do get your work done, a man will take you out somewhere fun to get your mind off your school work for a few hours.
14. He sees your SUCCESS as his SUCCESS
College is where you get ready for the real world. A man will strive to put his best foot forward and push you to do the same. He will attend every job fair and networking event with you knowing that your success is his success. A true power couple.
15. Will always reminds you that he cares
Lastly, a man will show how much he cares by surprising you with dinner at work or even as simple as an I love you before bed. I personally love when my man texts me good morning<3
