All humans require food, but there is a cultural process in which we consume our food. James Beard said, “Food is our common ground, a universal experience.” Eating has equally become a social aspect and a need to survive. I will be using key interviews and books to elaborate on the importance of food as a unifying force for refugees in a new land because to them and most of us it’s a holistic experience. It not only serves as a way for them to create their own sense of identity, but it’s also a passageway for them to another culture. At the end of the day, we all need to eat, but it’s how we choose to do so that connects us to one another in a global aspect of things. This is why the food scene has seen a recent rise within the past decade. The creme de la creme of the food culture can be found in NYC, but with so many possibilities you can get overwhelmed. Here's a list of the 12 best places to eat in NYC.
1.Tompkins Square Bagels
The debate over the best bagels in the city will rage on for as long as we make ‘em. Whichever side you stand on, Tompkins Square Bagels can cater to both the traditional and the hipster tastebuds. Located in Brooklyn, customers can sit and watch as the bagels are crafted because yes it is an art.
2. Hot Dog Stands
There’s something crazy good about a salted pretzel from a hot dog stand. Maybe it’s the ingredients or the extra flavor the city air gives the soft, chewy snack.
3. Xi’an Famous Foods
Fresh pull noodles as if you were getting them off the streets in China themselves can be in your mouth with a quick trip down to Chinatown, the original location. Pro tip: the website has a tracker on the scale of busyness atm so make sure you check that out before you head on over.
4. Sarge’s Deli
24/7. I repeat twenty-four seven. This diner is always open which means an infinite amountage of subs, sandwiches, and matzo ball soup. Not to mention the delicious breakfast on a menu that will surely overwhelm you, but will never leave you saying “There’s nothing for me.”
5. Blank Slate Coffee + Kitchen
Toast. We’re talking avocado toast here. Get it how ever you like it because one things for sure-- it’ll be bomb. Take what you knew about brussel sprouts from your childhood and throw them away because when you try the ones here you’ll know how much you’ve been missing out on exactly.
6. MAMO Restaurant
Located in Soho, this favorite takes the classic New York slice and amps it up a notch with that extra umf. Anyone that’s been here knows that I’m talking about the truffle pizza. Taking the best type of pizza (thin crust for the win) in the world and topping it with a delicacy is perfect for any meal of the day.
7. Housing Works Bookstore Café
Are you the type of person that likes to read while you grab a bite to eat? This is the place for you to grab soups, salads, and cold drinks. Not to mention, they also host events and many people have been known to have their weddings there.
8. Dumpling Kingdom
Dumplings are one of my favorite foods. Given the amount of dumpling shops you can find in this city, it’s safe to say that is also a general consensus. This little shop will easily satisfy your cravings and carb you up. Carbs are your friends.
9. Graffiti Food & Wine Bar
Dining is more than just the food in many cases. It’s a holistic experience. At Graffiti Food & Wine Bar both of those categories can easily be fulfilled. This tiny place is known for top-quality food as well as experience. But make sure to get your reservations because it would truly be a tragedy to miss.
10. Up Thai
With one step in here, the interior will leave you breathless. The colorful lanterns fill your eyes while your stomach is filled with delicious foods that taste like you got them off the streets of Thailand themselves. Get away from the rush of the city and find a serene setting here.
11. Humboldt and Jackson
If you’re willing to take a trip into Brooklyn, head here for an artisan tapas experience with food plated so beautifully you can’t resist taking a picture. With various events throughout the year, each time you go a new surprise will likely be in store.
12. Dun-Well Doughnuts
If you’re already in Williamsburg, dessert is a great option. One of the best doughnut shops actually does not have the typical doughnut at all. This completely vegan doughnut shop will blow your mind with their spongy donuts filled with non-dairy ice cream that’ll leave you wondering how.
