An Open Letter To My Older Siblings

Let me first start off by saying that regardless of what happens, I love you and would do anything for you. Never forget it.

I don't know if you know it or not, but being your younger sibling is the most irritating, infuriating, beautiful, heart-warming thing a younger sibling can ever experience. Nothing in this world is quite like the bonding between siblings.

Being your sibling is and forever will be a lifetime of losing your stuff. It's unavoidable – accept it. You can’t change it, and these shoes and shirts no longer belong to you. I know that every older sibling will ask, “Why do you have to steal my stuff? Get your own stuff!” I’m sorry to inform you, but the younger sibling genetic makeup does not allow us to let you and your stuff be. Again, accept it.

The irritating and infuriating part of being your younger sibling lies in the amount of common sense and smarts that you tend to lack at times. How is it that you can be so smart and yet so dumb at the same time? The levels that you can reach astound me... but I digress. You also insist on aggravating me all of the time. It seems that despite you being the older siblings, you have mastered the ability to be loveable nuisances.

Despite all this, I must say that being a younger sibling is an experience I wouldn’t trade for the world. Although you may not know it, I look up to you. Yes, some of the things you do or don’t do may be wrong, but I appreciate that. By you being yourself and living life the best you can, you allow me to be even better. When I succeed, know that it’s because of your experiences that I referenced. When I do something stupid, know that it was me attempting to do the same things you did but failing. When I have my own children one day, know that I will use your words of wisdom that helped me when I was younger. Know that I will always cherish being your baby sister – even when I want to hurt you beyond all reason.

Note: This message is directed towards each and every person that I have ever called sister or brother, not just those that I have by blood. Each one of you matters to me. Always keep this thought in mind:

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
