Being A Black Belt

It's kind of a big deal.

Being A Black Belt
My photo.

When I was testing for my black belt, I was asked to write an essay about what being a black belt means to me. Although, I am no longer in karate, I do still hold it near and dear to my heart. Each year around the holidays, there is a black belt banquet. After racking my brain, and freaking out about the fact that I had finally reached the time to test for my black belt, I mustered up a few words about what being a black belt means to me.

Being a black belt is a big deal. I'm not tooting my own horn, but before you consider aiming towards becoming a black belt, you should know some things. Martial arts is a beautiful thing, and it is meant for everyone. But you really have to be dedicated, and stick with it. It's not easy, it's a ton of fun, and it will bring you physical and mental strength. That being said, here is my take on what it means to be a black belt.

It means you have to set an example now. It means that when all hope seems lost, and you don't think you can go any longer, you have to push through. It means that you are a strong individual. It means more responsibility. It means no excuses. It means a plethora of things that make up the monumental honor that is becoming a black belt. It means you wear that belt with respect, and even when you aren't in class, or don't have it on; you still carry yourself with as much integrity an self respect as you have when you are doing your form on the karate floor. It means you represent not only yourself, but your school. It means that you cannot take this lightly. It means commitment. It means coming into class on your worst days, and still smiling because you are a black belt, and all the other belts look up to you. It means acting with purpose. It means holding your head high, but not looking down on others. It means you are a new and improved you. It means you work harder than before. It means you have to do all of these things, and keep your composure. It means you be strong, and always try your best. Being a black belt is a part of who you are, not just an accessory. It means all of this, and so much more.

I can't really put into words how much it would mean to me emotionally to become a black belt. It's kind of like climbing a mountain, and reaching the top, and you want to stay on top of that mountain forever knowing you have to come down eventually, but you always have that memory, and then when you are ready to get more belts you climb more mountains. It means the world to me to have had the privilege to climb this mountain.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
