Time to rise and shine!

Becoming A Morning Person
Reader's Digest

If you're a morning person, then you know how quiet the world is when you get up before the sun. When your alarm goes off and it's still pitch black outside but you wake up feeling like you can conquer anything, then you know you're a morning person. When you get up early, it gives you a chance to accomplish all of the tasks you have for the day. Not to mention how amazing it feels when you can check off your entire to-do list.

Waking up early gives you a new chance at a new day. It's a blank slate. That day can be anything you want it to be. You get a chance to watch the sunrise and see nature work its magic. You also get the chance to finally have time for some breakfast and quiet time to ease yourself into the day you're about to have.

Although, if you're a morning person, then you know how much non-morning people don't like us. But that's okay. We wake up feeling energized and organized. We have time to accomplish things before we have to be at class or our job. We get a chance to feel at ease because we don't have to worry about our commute or a paper that needs to be printed out. It's a time where we can plan out our day and know that we actually have the time for anything.

Waking up early has many benefits, and here are some ways that you can transition into becoming a morning person:

1. Go to bed early

Like Benjamin Franklin said, "Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise."

2. Don't use your phone before bed or within the first ten minutes of waking up

If you don't use your phone before bed, then it will be easier to fall asleep. Also, if you don't use your phone when you first get up, then you're more likely to get a start to your day without staying on the phone for a prolonged period of time.

3. Drink a glass of water when you first get up

Doing this will help to get your metabolism going and it will also rehydrate your body which hasn't seen any water while you were asleep.

4. Stretch as soon as you wake up

While you were sleeping your muscles were not getting any exercise, and to help wake them up, you need to stretch.

5. Try putting your alarm across the room

If you have trouble getting up because you always hit snooze, try moving your alarm. This will allow you to have to get up and move once it goes off.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
