Because A Pretty Face Isn't All That Matters

Today’s society puts such an enormous amount of pressure on young adults to look a certain way. These young adults are told that if their physical appearance does not meet a certain ideal, they are not valuable. I decided to contradict these requirements forced upon the youth of today and create a list of things I would rather be than a pretty face.

1. Loyal: I would much rather my friends and family know that I would give them the world and so much more if I had the chance, rather than just being there to take a good picture with them. Being someone that my friends and family can count on and believe in is something that is so important to me. I am the girl who is constantly asking about my friends’ lives, wondering what they're up to, and reminding them how proud I am to be their friend.

2. Humble: I want to be aware of the abilities I possess without having too big of an ego or a boastful attitude. No matter how many compliments I receive, I will never let those things get to my head and allow me to think I am superior to any other. There is something so intriguing about a truly humble person and I strive to be an image of that.

3. Hilarious: I would much prefer to be able to attract people with a knock-knock joke or a clever punch line than be a pretty face. I am the girl who has witty comebacks constantly playing in my mind in response to everything the people around me say. I am the girl that can never finish her stories because I am already laughing too hard to get to the funny part. I am the girl who sends funny pictures of animals to my friends or texts them pick up lines when I know they're having a bad day.

4. Supportive: Whether it's riding in the car for three and a half hours to my brothers baseball tournament, or reminding my sister that she is making me proud in college, I would much rather my friends and family describe me as someone who is supportive rather than pretty. I want the people around me to know that I will stand behind them and support them until my last breath.

5. Passionate: I want people to be able to feel the passion I have radiating off of me. I want my ambitions and driven mind to come through the surface and outshine my physical appearance. Talking to someone about what they are most passionate about is simply fascinating and I aspire to fascinate people with my immense passion for life.

6. Original: Everyday I strive to continue building myself and my personality in my own individual way. I do not want to be a copy of another person, I want to be my own inspirational being in as many ways as I can. I constantly remind those around me that the most important thing they can be is themselves, and I truly believe that.

7. Kind: Simply put, when people think of me or hear my name, I want pleasant thoughts to come to mind. I strive to be friendly and approachable from all angles. I am the person that will drive to my friends house at 2 am with ice cream because her boyfriend broke up with her. I am the girl who says hi to dogs on the street and smiles at every passing car. It is so difficult to find a genuinely nice person, and I want people to think of me as exactly that.

Although today’s society values a pretty face much more than a beautiful mind, I do not strive to be eye candy, I strive to be soul food.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
