While most of us were sleeping early Sunday morning, Denver Bronco Aqib Talib was out at a nightclub and got shot in the leg, one day before the Super Bowl champion team was set to visit the White House. He was at a club in Dallas, Texas, where he has an off-season home, and he was accidentally shot in the right leg.
Reports vary about the incident itself. It’s still uncertain who exactly shot Talib, but apparently two other men were shot at the nightclub. He told Dallas police he was too drunk to remember what happened. However, this isn’t Talib’s first run in with the law. Last year, he and his brother were investigated for a connection to an aggravated assault at, surprise, another Dallas nightclub. He’s also been booked for battering a Florida cab driver and suspended for breaking the NFL’s drug policy.
Rumors have been swirling that Talib pulled a Plaxico Burress and shot himself in the leg. In 2008, Burress, a New York Giants wide receiver, was in a New York nightclub and accidentally gave himself a nice flesh wound from a gun shot in his right leg. According to the Wall Street Journal article, he not only had the gun unholstered in the waistband of his sweatpants but was drinking alcohol - which is a no-no. And he didn’t have a permit to carry the gun in New York, so he was sentenced to two years in prison for failing to acquire a concealed carry license; well, he actually only served 20 months but soon became the laughing stock of the Giants.
Who accidentally shoots himself in the leg? Who wears sweatpants to a nightclub? I think that violates most dress codes, but hey, he was a Giant in a NYC nightclub, so I don’t think he had trouble getting in. I understand that guys like their sweatpants, and that’s fine and all, but be careful what’s in those pockets. The typical check before leaving the house goes: phone, keys, wallet. Nowhere in there is handgun. These NFL players have to think twice about when and where they decide to bring their handguns.
This was very poor planning on Talib’s part because he missed a once in a lifetime chance to go to the White House as a Bronco. I say that because look who’s the current starting QB for the Broncos: Mark Sanchez. Yeah, good luck with that. Now Talib is going to have to find a new use for the $3,500 white suit he had custom made for the trip.
Moral of the story: leave your handguns at home and stop wearing sweats to the club.
