An Open Letter/Pep talk To High School Me

I know things are hard now, but just in case you need to know what your work is leading to.

Hey! How are things doing now? I know you might be between mental breakdowns and stressed over whatever your dealing with right now, weather it be that history IA (please actually read your sources) or your IB Chemistry work (actually do your homework) or even that friendship that shall not be named anymore (Its not worth it and she's still mad about it, I think) but I promise you, things do get better. College is so much better than high school in so many ways. You'll join clubs and have fun and make friends. I know its hard and I know you probably hate your family but once your away from them you'll miss them, trust me. Please read this whenever you need it, college is hard and all of your teachers and your counselor and the college and career woman were right, but getting the hell out of town for awhile is the best thing you will do for yourself. Make sure you take care of yourself now, because its a lot harder to find the time in college and you might end up having a breakdown in front of your english professor if you don't (I am still really sorry about that!)

But you are proving all your teachers from high school who did not believe in you wrong, you are kicking ass here and people actually love your writing and the content that you are writing about. You actually passed your exams and are ahead in some classes and you can do this. Please do your homework and don't listen to that voice in your head that tells you that you will be fine when you know you won't be. Send a message to that guy that keeps poking you on Facebook, because it might go well ( and if you don't he still might be poking you to this very day). Don't be scared to actually take mental health days and call your mom to ask to go home early, you actually do need a break to just sleep all day and cry at Netflix, because they work wonders and I don't know where they were at two years ago. All that extracurricular stuff and arts drama thats happening right now will make you glad it happened and guess what? Eventually that person left so you can have hope in what you love again and see new life brought into a program that you thought was going to die. All of that work and note taking will pay off later. So please, sweetheart, treat yourself well and go to bed if its 10 o clock and you are crying at your math or history or just crying at your stress and know tomorrow will be a new day and you can tackle it tomorrow and try again. You made it out of that place and you can make it out, or I would not be here writing this now. You can do all of this and college is so much better than you could imagine. You got this.

Love,

Me, 2016

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Being Invisible The Best Super Power

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
