An Ode To Syllabus Week

An Ode To Syllabus Week
essaytigers.com

You've been away from school for a while, and now you've returned. Although you're excited to see your friends again after what seemed like forever, you also have to get back into the routine of going to class, doing homework, and participating in all your activities. Are you ready?

After weeks of endless laying on the couch, Netflix binging, and eating, readjusting so quickly can be tough. Fortunately, we have a magical transition period at the beginning of each semester, a time where we can ease into our crazy college lives again while still having some time to enjoy ourselves. This holy time is known to most as Syllabus Week, and it is sacred to students everywhere.

So here's to you, Syllabus Week, Reliever of Initial Academic Pressure and Producer of Good Times!

How nice it is to spend the first day of class -- that is, Monday and Tuesday! -- simply going over how the class is set up! How great it is to not have any homework to worry about for those first couple days (well, most of the time...)! How wonderful it is to come home and know that you can't yet do anything about all those projects and papers your professors told you about!

Thank you, Syllabus Week, for giving us a reason to live stress-free every night for a whole week. For allowing us to watch the College Football National Championship Game without worrying about having to turn in something the next day. For giving us more time for TV and Netflix without freaking out about schoolwork. For giving us more time to eat. For giving us more time to exercise think about going to the gym. For giving us more time with friends (we have lots of catching up to do, after all!). Oh, and more time with our beds.

Thank you, Syllabus Week, for giving those of us in the midst of the sorority recruitment process a well-deserved break. After four days of barely any sleep and endless talking, we cherish this time to rest before doing it all again this coming weekend.

Thank you, Syllabus Week, for giving us a fresh start. We may have messed up at times last semester, we may not have accomplished things that we wanted to accomplish, but thanks to you, we have time to evaluate our goals for the next four months and plan out how to achieve them.

Without you, Syllabus Week, we'd probably go crazy. I'm not sure how we did this whole "immediately hit the ground running again after a long vacation" thing in high school -- or how we'll do it once we're adults in the real world -- but for now, I'm so glad we have you, Syllabus Week, to ease the transition. Cheers!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
