Beauty standards have long been debated, especially American beauty standards for women. Right now it seems there has been a push towards athletic figures. Now pushing past the trend of “I nstagram models,” let’s get to two real athletes.
Two of the most popular female athletes right now are Ronda Rousey and Serena Williams. Two women with actual athletic build, but the two women are perceived almost entirely differently. Before Ronda Rousey was knocked out by Holly Holm, she began gaining popularity for her swift knockouts and undefeated record. She is also known for her appearance. Rousey has had to deal with fat-shamers for her muscular build. However, I think it is safe to say there is a greater number of UFC viewers who find her extremely attractive.
.
In contrast to Rousey, Serena Williams who has won 21 grand slams making her one of the top professional athletes has received a considerable amount of criticism for her muscular build. Her successful career has been marred by overtly sexist and racist remarks from not only online trolls, but also from the mouths of media and sports commentators. While the longevity and success of William’s career surpasses Rousey. Ronda Rousey has still quickly risen to popularity, and she won the ESPY's female athlete of the year over Serena. Although this award really holds no weight, it is still surprising when comparing their success.
Perhaps, the difference in arenas is a key factor. In a UFC setting, fighters are expected to have a muscular build in order to take down their opponent. In the World Tennis Association, female players are expected to be athletic yet still slender. In other words, the ideal vision of femininity.
Despite the differences in perception between Rousey and Williams, the two share something in common. The success of women in sports has often been overshadowed by the sexualization of female athletes whether it is seemingly positive or negative. Commentators for decades have remarked on the sex appeal of the female athlete’s body.
As for beauty standards, lets embrace the differences. The next time you mention a female athlete, try to focus on her success as an athlete before you comment on how sexy she is.
