Growing up in (or 45 minutes outside of) Philadelphia can be pretty cool. It's so cool I tend to take it for granted at times. I sometimes forget that I can spontaneously get on a train with friends and spend a day exploring Center City Philly. Growing up 45 minutes north of Philadelphia I didn't realize the benefits of our location, like an hour from the shore, or 45 minutes from Six Flags, and the one that was most important to me, and hour and a half train ride from the big apple. It wasn't untilI went to college in Kentucky that I realized the benefits of my location. Now being done with my first year out of state, I have come to realize that there are some signs that you're from right outside of Philadelphia.
So without further ado, here are the 8 signs you are from right outside of Philadelphia!
1. Sports
Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, and my personal favorite the Phillies. Going to these games is something everyone looks forward to, even if they aren't a Philly fan. That being said, if you aren't a Philly fan then you go at your own risk. Philly may be the City of Brotherly love, but you aren't a brother if you're in another team's colors. Sorry.
2. 95
Everyone agrees, 95 is a horrible but necessary road to Philly. Between the drivers that seem to want to get into an accident, to the construction that I'm pretty sure has been going on since I was born, and I'm 19, it should be label as one of the most dangerous roads to drive on.
3. Going down the shore
Yes, you read that right, down the shore. We don't say we're going to the shore, or beach. The summer is filled with trips to the shore, both planned and spontaneous, and both in the day and at night.
4. Six Flags and Sesame
Everyone and their mother (literally) go to Six Flags and Sesame in the summer. Six Flags is 45 minutes away, and Sesame is pretty much in our back yard, or 20 minutes away. And once everyone can work, most people either work at Sesame or Six Flags (all I can say is free tickets!).
5. Weird sayings
Jawn, tapping the mac, jimmies (NOT sprinkles), wiz wit, Djeatyet? (or otherwise known as "Did you eat yet?").
6. New York City
An hour and a half train ride is all that is between me and the big apple, and I couldn't be any happier. Many day trips have been spent in New York, and many great memories. Definitely a place for everyone to visit.
7. Historic Philadelphia
The city that was once the capital of the U.S. This city holds so much history, and it is totally worth the 45 minute drive to see and learn about. Honestly, most kids around here have witnessed or been apart of a reenactment, and a school trip to the Liberty Bell is the norm.
8. Saying you're from Philly
Everyone living outside of Philly will say they are from Philly. It's just easier than explaining where we're from (plus we have Philly pride).
Philly will always feel like home, no matter how long I am away. It is the City of Brotherly love, just remember to wear your Philly colors!
