“This is the year. This is the year I’m finally going to understand football!”
And every year I’m disappointed. More likely than not, you’ll find me taking pictures, checking social media, or searching for food during a football game. I love being a part of college football atmosphere— or more accurately all of the hype surrounding the game. Here are eight reasons you know you (like me) may not be a football person:
You remember the game by what you wore rather than who was playing
The sentence “Remember that one game where they got a field goal with six seconds left?” has little to no meaning to you. But with “The game where the other team was that weird yellow color,” you can easily remember the place, time, and exactly what you were wearing to that day.
You clap when everyone around you claps
At least you look like you know what’s going on…
You would never consider wasting DVR space for a football game
Watching football is more of a social thing. Why watch it alone? Plus it doesn’t make sense to waste space when you could be recording the "Harry Potter" movie marathons.
You’re the one planning what is going on before and after the game
You have your list of tailgates ready the day before, and you spend the entire game deciding on whether Torchy’s or Chuy's sounds better.
All of your football knowledge comes from movies you’ve seen
"The Blind Side," "Remember the Titans," "Jerry Maguire"…you name it. And even though we’re past high school football, we all know you’re still waiting to tell our football quarterback “Waiting for you is like waiting for rain in this drought. Useless and disappointing.” like Hillary Duff in “A Cinderella Story.”
Very rarely are you actually watching the game
While all your friends have their eyes glued to the field, to you, this is the ideal time to people watch. And if you're actually watching the team? It’s definitely because #8 is really cute.
You don’t know the terminology
Multiple times my freshman year after football games my father would text me asking about what I thought of specific plays. Usually, this was the moment I would have to pass my phone off to a friend so they could talk sports with him (sorry Dad…).
You’re more concerned with what Instagram to post
Okay so which team is playing us again? How can I make a cute caption out of it? This process can take hours and needs your full concentration.
While you may not be the biggest fan of the actual sport, the likes you get on your Insta bring you as much joy as a touchdown for your team would.
