If you ask a majority of people from Sacramento who've been there their entire lives whether they like or hate it, they're probably going to tell you Sacramento sucks and it's boring.
I definitely thought that before I moved to Los Angeles, and now that I've left and I'm coming back, I definitely appreciate my hometown on another level. I found eight reasons why Sacramento is home.
1. It's truly 'The City of Trees'
Most people you ask will tell you they missed when Sacramento was "The City of Trees" because of all the beautiful landmarks we have, bike trails, nature walks, nature centers and beautiful landmarks.
Now, being 'The Golden State,' none of that has changed, besides people truly understanding what we're all about. Sacramento is still beautiful, nonetheless, and I'm so happy to be a Sacramentian.
2. There are literally hundreds of places to eat
Something most people point out when they come visit Sacramento, especially if they're not from Sacramento, is the variety of food options and restaurants we have. Our restaurants range from Pho (fuh), Indian, American, Mediterranean, so many Chinese restaurants and we actually have almost every major chained restaurant that's out there. In N Out, Taco Bell, KFC, McDonald's, Dominos, Togo's, Pizza Hut, just to name a few.
Something pretty interesting most people don't know is how many 'mom & pop' shops we have. From restaurants to beauty salons and everything near and far between. Sacramento is truly a city of family virtue. It's pretty amazing.
3. Living almost anywhere in NorCal leads to a nature or hiking trail
Living in Sacramento is more diverse and unique in terms of exercise and nature. We have hiking trails, river access, beautiful viewpoints, a bunch of rivers and almost anywhere you live most of the drive to get there is between 15-60 minutes no matter where you live.
If you're a huge nature-loving-outdoor-exploring type of person, Sacramento might just be the city for you. Between hiking the American River Bike Trail, going to Red Bridge or even white-water-rafting down the American River during Summer, Sacramento definitely wins the award for one of the prettiest and most engaging cities.
4. We're literally in the middle of EVERYTHING
Whether you want to take a day trip and reminisce about the "Full House" days in San Francisco or visit Hippie Hill on 4/20, want to go snowboarding in Lake Tahoe at Squaw Valley, gamble in Reno, visit family in San Diego or even take a trip down to Hollywood or go to Disneyland for your family vacation, Sacramento is the heart of all those destinations.
Your drive to San Francisco will be an hour and a half, Tahoe about two hours, Reno about three and San Diego about six. It's a perfect place to live if you have family in outlining states and love some road trips. I sure love it!
5. Our diversity is out of this world
Something so unique about Sacramento is our diversity. Among our 496,000 residents, our diversity is out of this world. Anywhere you go eat, visit, shop or play, you're going to run into so many different people from so many different backgrounds and stories. To go into more detail about our diverse population, visit "World Population Review" to read more.
6. We had a freakin' movie made about our city!
By now, I'm sure most of us have all seen the box office hit "Lady Bird" starring Laurie Metcalf and Saoirse Ronan about Lady Bird McPherson who grew up in the beautiful Old Town Sacramento during the late '70s living with her parents and hating Sacramento.
This movie does a beautiful job capturing my city in all its grit and glory. I really enjoyed this movie, and if you're not from Sacramento or Northern California, I highly recommend watching it to truly understand what it is so many of us love about this city.
7. Golden One Center
Early 2016 we finally finished construction on the now, most state-of-the-art arena on the West Coast. Golden 1 Center reflects the fabric of Northern California by utilizing regionally sourced materials that range from glass to recycled aluminum to potentially precast concrete. A rooftop solar array generates up to 1.2 megawatts augmented by an 11-megawatt solar field.
Installing solar power is part of the Sacramento Kings ownership’s goal to have its new sports and entertainment center be the most technologically advanced arena in the country. The arena earned LEED Platinum certification in late September 2016. Golden One Center is truly one of the most beautiful and impressive arena's I've visited thus far. If you're in Sacramento, swing by, grab some coffee at Temple, visit DoCo and take some Insta-worth photos.
8. 'Home is Sacramento'
Something beautiful about Sacramento is our community involvement. If you're a Sacramentian at heart, you've heard of @TPOS on Instagram. In 2014, Zayn Silmi started this Instagram account in hopes to truly bring Sacramento together. Zayn is an active lover of the city, in all it's good and bad. Zayn has helped us all truly capture what it means to live in and visit Sacramento.
From getting his merchandise in major stores throughout the city, being on ABC10 news talking about his success and love for the city, partnering with Cayla Jordan on her bakery inside Arden Fair Mall and even teaming up with CREAM awaiting their grand opening, Zayn has done an amazing job in capturing all of it. Head on over to his Instagram to truly capture what it means to live in this beautiful city.
