6 Ways to Stay Healthy in College

College is doubtfully one of the best, most exhilarating time in a person’s life. You’re bounded by so many people, trying to figure themselves out just as you are. However college also comes with some stressful, overwhelming and busy days. There’s hours of studying, early classes, and all-nighters. Most students don’t realize how important health is. If your body isn’t healthy, chances are your mental, social and emotional health will suffer as well. It can be challenging to form and maintain a healthy lifestyle but it’s definitely possible. I’m here to help you find a healthy balance of all those challenging things.

Below are 6 ways to stay healthy in college:

  • 1.Visualize your day- Each morning, spend just a few minutes planning out your day. This helped me balance out school, work and my social life. Plan out in your head or write down what you want your day to look like. This step may be small but it can really organize your time, go ahead and accomplish your day!
  • 2.Eating well- First start by eating breakfast, breakfast is essential for brain function (which every college student can use.) I'm sure you've been told this since elementary school, but breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. Even if it’s something small and on the go, the decision to eat breakfast is one you won’t regret. It isn’t a good idea to go a long time in between meals. You are more likely to binge if you are hungry, and waiting too long to eat can also damage your metabolism. So eat in moderation, have small snacks in between meals, and always lean towards the healthier options.
  • 3.Stay hydrated- I strongly recommend carrying a water bottle around with you. Hydration is significant for appetite management, metabolism, and brain function. Be sure to get at least 64 ounces of water a day. Drinking the right amount can help result in weight loss, clearer skin, and a boost in your immune system.
  • 4.Exercise- As a college student I know how easy it is to skip working out, and hit the snooze button instead. Unfortunately you’ll regret that in the long run. Working out not only helps you stay fit but it is a massive stress reliever. I found that running is a good escape, you can just let go, distress and think.
  • 5.Surround yourself with positive people- The people that surround you play a huge roll in your lifestyle and habits. So when you make new friends in college be cautious of the people you choose and make sure they will help better you. The good thing about college is there is thousands of people around for you to choose from. Friends should better your life and bring the best out in you.
  • 6.Take time out of your day to do something you love- One of the most important thing about health is to actually enjoy the life you are living. As a student you will spend lots of time stressing over tests and papers and not spend nearly enough time appreciating the life you’ve been given. Taking time for yourself allows you to increase perspective on your life and focus on things that matter.

There are a lot of things you can do to make sure you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Starting with the 6 small steps I provided, you're guaranteed to see and feel a difference in your body.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
