1. Don't be difficult
If you are one of those people who always have to be on the left side of the room or like to keep the room at a chilly 68 degrees, make sure to inform your new live in best friend. He or she may not be the happiest if you blind side them with your odd habits. Just make sure you will be willing to work around theirs too.
2. Expect visitors
You will be told that it is easier to meet people if you leave your door open and you may or may not take that advice. What you should do though is be prepared for meeting your roomies friends. Even if you plan on keeping to yourself make sure you will be welcoming enough to say a quick hi to the people your roommate deems worthy enough to allow into your shared space.
3. Talk about your problems, to your roommate
You can't expect complaining to your friends is going to help fix the problem back in your room. If you have something that is bothering you make sure you bring it up when you both are home and don't have anywhere to be in a short while. Springing something when one of you is on your way out is a good way to make more conflict than the might be necessary to the problem.
4. Be courteous about your headphones
If one of you is playing something out loud, just put your headphones in. If it is truly bothering you, just ask them to turn it down or off. Honesty is the best policy and frankly it won't be that big of a deal.
5. Find a rhythm
You both have classes and maybe even work so try to figure out what works best with each other's schedules. Work around them and make sure you guys are together at least a little bit. Getting to know one another will make the school year just that much better. Being able to come home to someone that you actually get along with and can talk to will be a blessing as the school days go on.
6. Share your stuff
If you have an extra slice of pizza bring it back with you and offer it to the roommate. They would be touched that you thought of them. Same goes for snacks, pencils, and laundry supplies (just to name a few). Just remember that at one point that good karma will come back around to you!
