The Rio Olympics are happening right now, and everybody is tuning in. With the help of the media, the public gets to see the good, the bad, and the "oops" as I'd like to call it. With thousands of athletes at the Olympics, there's bound to be some scandals and conspiracies. Here's 6 of the sketchiest, funniest, and scariest.
1. Badminton Players Purposefully Losing
During the 2012 London Games, the badminton teams of China, Indonesia, and South Korea all intentionally lost during their matches because they believed that by doing so they'd get to play a weaker team in the following round.
2. Angel Matos Kicking A Referee In The Face
In Olympic Taekwondo, if one gets injured, they can get a one minute "medical time out", and if they need more time after this, they must let the referee know, otherwise they are disqualified. Matos got injured during a match, and exceeded the one minute allowed time, and was disqualified during the 2008 Olympics. He then got so angry that he decided to kick the referee in the face. Since then, the World TKD Federation has banned him for life.
3. 400M Sprinter and Part-Time Murderer
Oscar Pistorius made history when he became the first ever amputee to compete in the Olympics in 2012. He won silver in the 400M sprint, but what he's more famous for is murdering his girlfriend in 2014. He was sentenced to six years in prison for shooting his girlfriend four times.
4. A Judge Mishap
During the 2002 Winter Games, the Canadian duo of Sale and Pelletier in figure skating had an impeccable performance. It was therefore a shock to the world when the Russian duo of Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze got the gold medal. It turns out that one of the judges was pressured into voting for the Russians by being promised that the French would be given gold in the following day's events. In the end, both the Russian duo and Canadian duo received gold medals.
5. "I'm 16!" Give Or Take...
In order to participate in the Olympics, athletes must be at least 16 years old. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Dong Fangxiao was doing incredibly in women's gymnastics. Some digging in her past revealed that she was actually too young to be competing. Her bronze medal was taken from her when it was found out she lied about her age, claiming to be 16 when she was actually 14. The funny part? The Executive Board actually made her homeland of China pay for all the costs that it took to unveil her past.
6. The Nancy Kerrigan Attack
In the 1994, Nancy Kerrigan was expected to attend the 1994 Olympics as a figure skater, but this dream was cut short. After practicing at the rink for the World Championships, Kerrigan was attacked with a police handle in her leg. With a horribly injured kneecap, she was forced to withdraw from the World Championships. It was discovered that her rival at the time, Tonya Harding, planned the attack with her boyfriend, in order to help Tonya win. While she recovered and went on to win Silver at the 1994 Games in Norway, her attack is considered one of the greatest Olympic scandals of all time.
