Ever feel like the world is on your shoulders and you have nowhere to run to but right back to bed? Yeah, I feel that way daily. Some days there are just not enough hours to get me that little something extra that I need for myself to get back on track. So for the person that understands where I'm at in my walk, here are five ways to keep it together during your most busy season while also remembering that self care is actually a thing:
1. Wake up with intention
There are days lately (and basically since I became a mom) that I just can't bring myself to get out of bed. Yes, my daughter is normally up hours before I would choose to be, so I obviously have to be awake and ready to go, but most days I stay in bed and we nurse or play until it is just time to get up. On these days, I need to be intentional with my life, and while I don't always do it, it is necessary. To conclude that point, get up every morning with the mindset of "today is my day". Even in my hardest moments, this affirmation makes all the difference.
2. Take more baths
Yeah, I'm not much of a bath person (sitting in warm water for more than half an hour can be a bit yucky), but sometimes it can really make the difference between sore muscles and a comfortable evening. I will say that lavender oil is the bomb for relaxing and a few drops in bathwater with some epsom salt thrown in makes for a gentle detox that in turn gives comfort vibes throughout the experience. Add a cup of tea and a few candles, and you've got a date.
3. Exercise
Yep, I said it, the most dreaded word in human existence. Just kidding, but seriously, I hate exercise. Just the thought of working out makes me want to jump right back on my couch and turn on Parenthood. However, yoga in the morning before my day really helps me to stay motivated and productive. I don't know if it is the way that stretching helps my muscles or if the aesthetic of the yoga mat makes me feel like an athlete, but either way, I love it.
4. Make lists
I am definitely a list person. I use lists to keep track of our bills, grocery trips, and several other things (including my kid). While lists aren't the thing for everybody, they work for me, so I would definitely encourage them to help keep track of things that need to get done. Whether reminders, sticky notes, or alarms set on the cellular device you use help, utilize tools to keep organized. It will make all the difference.
5. Make your bed
This is something I hate to do. Yeah, I know, it takes all of a few minutes, but just something about it makes me cringe. However, after all is said and done, I walk away with a clean looking bedroom and a sense of accomplishment, so from me to you, make the damn bed.
So, after I have stepped off the soapbox, I hope this article put you (yes, you reader) in a better place than you were before. Productivity can be difficult, I get it, but it isn't impossible. Mind over matter, people. Keep it real, and you'll keep it together.
