Everyone knows that stress is the worst. It feels terrible, triggers anxiety and makes you just want to plain cry until you can't cry anymore (and run out of Ben & Jerry's). As a college student, I have this feeling consistently. But I've kind of gotten sick of it. So here are some coping methods that may help you get through the week.
1. Get Enough Sleep
This one should be a no-brainer. When someone doesn't get enough sleep, memory, cognition, and physical function go down the drain. This will inhibit your ability to be productive. The lure of your bed becomes too strong and eventually you have accomplished nothing you wanted to get done. This only adds to stress the next day, which is extremely counterproductive.
2. Work Out Breaks
Believe it or not working out improves your mental function immensely. It relieves tensions in your muscles, releases happy endorphins and generally makes you feel refreshed. It also wakes you up when you are starting to get sluggish. So go get on the treadmill and do a mile or so; it's just another reason to go work out.
3. Clean Your Space
Oftentimes, a workplace reflects your mind. So. it's no surprise when someone walks into my room and sees a messy desk. In order to feel organized, I clean. I will pick up anything on my desk and sort it into piles or put it away in an orderly fashion. Just be sure to not use this as a procrastination tactic because the next thing you know your room will be spotless, but your pile of things to do will be just as high.
4. Healthy Diet
Stress does physically affect the body, so people who have a healthy diet are physically more prepared to deal with stress. Sugar and caffeine should only be consumed when energy is depleteing and in small amounts, otherwise, you will crash hard a few hours later.
5. Schedule
Make a schedule, but not a basic one. Do a detailed schedule so you know how much time you have to do work but also have a life. Believe it or not, when studying or work obligations are done as soon as possible, it makes doing fun things much more enjoyable because you don't have that stress lingering in the back of your mind.
The world isn't ending and everything will work out in the end. So, take a deep breath and push forward.
