5 Things to Remember When You're Having an Anxiety Attack
Madison Bruce

I'm just a 20 year old college kid with anxiety, and these are some tricks that work for me. I don't claim to be a doctor or a therapist - all I know is that anxiety attacks can come at the most inconvenient times. Sometimes it's hard to pull yourself back to reality, let alone think at all when you're in the thick of it. So, if you get the chance to breathe (do that), and then remember...

1. This too shall pass

Whether you're at the grocery store, on a date, in class or anywhere else and your mind decides it's time to panic, remember that it won't always be like this. Tomorrow won't be like today, and next week isn't anything like last month. Time continues to pass and you won't always feel like you do right now. Your life is moving forward and the anxiety can't keep up. You won't always feel like this. Take comfort in the fact that time is passing.

2. Are you still breathing?

Really ask yourself the question. Are you? Remember that if you can talk you're still breathing. Try and say your name. Sometimes I look around and read things on signs I can see. I remember reading the entire menu out loud on a date once (you gotta do what you gotta do). Take deep breaths and remember that you are stronger than those racing thoughts.

3. Put your foot on the floor

You need to realize that just because it feels like your thoughts are in control, it doesn't mean you can't move your body. Grab onto something and then put your foot on the floor. Ground yourself, and realize that you are in control. Try and smell something around you and listen for something distinctive. Realize that life is still happening around you, the popcorn is still popping at the movie theater and people are still honking at each other in traffic on the freeway. You're still here too, with your foot on the ground.

4. Water

Whether you grab a glass or hop in the shower, water is restorative. Crank up the heat or freeze yourself out and it may take you out of your funk. Take your time. Not everything has to move in fast-forward even if your thoughts are. Soak in the tub or enjoy the steam. Slow down that racing heart and remember that your body is more water than anything else, so why not embrace it ?

5. Go outside

Don't let your anxiety keep you from going out. Whether that means opening your front door for a few minutes or taking a walk around the block, breathe it in. The sun and air are good for you. Don't be afraid of what's on the other side, take the chance and walk it out. Remember that you're still breathing and time is passing. Find solace in your mind, not fear. You've got this.

Living means feeling the good and the bad. Keep breathing, keep sipping your water and drink in that fresh air. You won't always feel like you do right now. Things won't always be as they are today. Enjoy the experience.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
