I am the mother of four perfect shelter babies and they are truly the loves of my life. Throughout my whole life, my family and I have always adopted from shelters and pounds. My two cats and two dogs are some of the biggest blessings in my life because they never fail to make me smile and provide cuddles in any situation. I am a huge supporter of shelter animals and here is why you should be too.
1. You are saving a life
Every animal that is adopted from a shelter saves a life. Every year 2.7 million shelter animals are euthanized because so many animals are brought into shelters and so few are adopted. So in adopting a dog or a cat from a shelter you are not only saving that animals life, but also opening up a space for another animal to have the chance of being adopted.
2. Shelter Animals are a Money Saver
I know that is never the first thought you consider when purchasing a new furry best friend, but pets are truly a financial burden. Not only is the initial purchase expensive, but everything that comes after including food, toys, collars, and leashes can add up. In buying an animal from a shelter, you are saving hundreds of dollars. The adoption price at the majority of shelters includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, and microchipping which is so convenient.
3. Your Animal Will Have Spunk
All of my shelter animals have little quirks that make them the wonderful pets they are. I truly believe that shelters have made my animals the goofy, crazy, and amazing fur-babies they are. Although I would be lying if I said I do not get frustrated with my pets, I would never change anything about any of them because they have so much character and will forever keep a smile on my face.
4. You Help Stop Puppy and Kitten Mills
Throughout the United States there is thousands of breeding facilities where an animal is alive simply to be repeatedly impregnated, have puppies or kittens, and live in a cage until the next set of puppies/kittens is born. It is a never ending circle for these poor animals who are forced to birth litter after litter until they are rendered useless and killed. These animals will never have a family and will never get to see their babies. Adopting shelter animals is one way to put an end to puppy or kitten mills.
5. You will change an animals life, and an animal will change your life
Shelter animals never had an easy start and in adopting you are giving them a chance at an amazing life and I can guarantee that your furry friend will be forever grateful to you. I know through my own experience that shelter animals truly do know the amazing life you provide them is a gift and they will never cease to thank you with cuddles and kisses. My fur babies have changed my life for good with their amazing hearts and I know that an adopted pet will do the same for you.
