The world has an abundant number of people who have created, set records and so much more. Some of those people are black women. Black women have been doing great things in this world, and I don't think we hear about them enough. Let us celebrate black women and their accomplishments!
1. Tera Poole
Tera Poole became the valedictorian at the University of Maryland's School of Dentistry for the class of 2016. People may ask why this is such a big deal because she is not the first to become valedictorian. Little do they know that Poole is the first African American to accomplish this in 176 years!
2. Simone Manuel
If you've been keeping up with the Rio Olympics, you would have seen this young woman swimming laps in the pools! Simone Manuel is an Olympic competitive swimmer who won two gold medals in the women's 100-meter freestyle, 4 x 100-meter medley relay as well as two silver medals in the women's 50-meter freestyle and women's 4 x 100 freestyle relay. She reminds us of how far African American women have come!
3. Ibtihaj Muhammad
Let's stay on the route of the Rio Olympics for a second. Ibtihaj Muhammad, an American sabre fencer, is known to be the first Muslim woman to appear in the Olympics while wearing her hijab and resulted in a bronze medal for America! She is important. Why? She is breaking barriers for other Muslim women out there who have big dreams! She is challenging the status quo.
4. Mae C. Jemison
Here's one woman who is literally out of this world! Mae C. Jemison is the first African-American astronaut, and flew into outer space in 1992. Not only is she the first African-American woman to be admitted into the astronaut training program and first African-American woman in outer space, but she also has a number of educational accomplishments. Jemison has a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering, a bachelor's degree in African and Afro-American studies and a doctorate degree in medicine as well as being involved in many other activities. Talk about a jack of all trades!
5. Cathy Hughes
They say sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before things start to come together. Cathy Hughes did just that as her radio show, "Radio One," began to take off! Cathy Hughes, who started off on a small radio station, eventually bought her own with her former husband. Hughes was rejected by 32 banks, but thankfully found a lender. She eventually had to sleep in her station with her son in order to make a living. Her talk show soon helped things turn upside down where she began to make a profit, now owns 65 stations, launched TV One, has the largest black-owned chain in the United States and is the first African-American woman to own a media company publicly traded on the U.S. Stock Exchange!
