The 5 College Freshmen You'll Meet

Every student comes across these types in the Fall semester.

Going to college, whether for the first time or even returning as a senior you're going to meet a lot of people. You're going to meet all sorts of people from different backgrounds with different interests, it's an amazing experience. But here are five freshmen you ARE going to meet this fall:

1. The kid that’s never been on their own.

This person has no clue what’s in store for living on their own. They possibly have never done a load of laundry in their life. You can tell they’ve never been on their own by noting their constant flustered-looking appearance, or always being on the phone with their mom. They may have accidentally turned a few white socks, pink. Or in some extreme cases, never wash their bedding… (gross!)

2. The dude that acts like they know what they’re doing.

Let’s be real here. No college freshmen entering their first semester has any idea of what they’re doing. This smooth dude will act as though they’ve been here before, act all buddy-buddy with everyone they meet. While they are totally friendly and cool to hang with, they probably don’t actually know what’s going on. They might even pretend they know exactly how to get to all their classes without actually having the slightest clue.

3. The kid who is just letting loose for the first time.

You will meet that one guy or girl who has never lived in a world where mom or dad hasn’t controlled what they as so much have for breakfast. The freedom of not having to ask parent’s permission to hang out with your new friends, or go out, might go to their heads. You can tell who these guys are based on their inability to understand how much alcohol at the party is enough (dangerous!) or their new-found impulses to do crazy and wild things.

4. The Studious One.

This kid means business. While college is ridiculously fun, you do go to learn. This brainiac has a strict study schedule and never misses a class. They seldom to never do crazy, wild, typical “college things”. You might think these guys are no fun, and too serious, but they are great friends! They will always have organized notes they’d be happy to share, always willing to give you a hand in a tricky class, and glad to share their bomb study snacks. The great ones will also be that sober friend willing to get you home safe after a wild night, that you will be forever grateful for.

5. The Pro.

This mom or dad friend always has your back. They just got to college and somehow already know how to handle things with a level head. They’re the perfect balance of someone who knows how to have fun but knows when to calm down. Their room is perfectly stocked with snacks and anything you might need. They’re usually on top of everything and frequently check in to see how you’re doing. They have tons of empathy and compassion for others.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
