Following this past Sunday's 35-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, rumors of Tom Coughlin resigning surfaces this week. Regardless of the truthfulness of the rumors, Sunday's game seemed like a final farewell by New York Giants fans to Coughlin in MetLife Stadium after he finished the regular season at 6-10.
In recent reports from Jay Glazer, Coughlin is expected to be replaced by Ben McAdoo, the Giants current offensive coordinator the slated favorite for head coach. McAdoo has already proven how to integrate the West Coast style offense and greatly reduce the number of interceptions Eli Manning has thrown in the past two seasons. The Giants are also considering Steve Spangulo, their current defensive coordinator. Spagnulo has had a previous rodeo as head coach with the St. Louis Rams, with an under par record of 10-38. Will his first stint as head coach dampen his chances of obtaining another opportunity with the Giants?
Coughlin played halfback at the University of Syracuse with future Hall-of-Famers like Larry Csonka and Floyd Little. His resident assistant at the time of his senior year at Syracuse was Jim Boheim, the third all-time winningest coach in college basketball history. Coughlin was once mentored by Bill Parcells, enshrined in the NFL Hall-of-Fame Class of 2013, who was the head coach of the Giants during the late 1980's. Greatness has surely followed Coughlin everywhere he has traveled and put him in position for success time after time.
Tom Coughlin who has produced 2 Super Bowl championships (XLII & XLVI) and 3 NFC East divisional championships (2005, 2008, 2011) in his 12-year stint with the New York Giants. Now one can only wonder if Tom Coughlin will retire gracefully on his own terms or fired after posting three consecutive losing seasons?
