24 Things Scarier Than Halloween

A college student's haunted house of horrors.

24 Things Scarier Than Halloween

1. Your alarm clock when you’ve only had three hours of sleep.

We've all been there. There aren't enough snooze buttons in the world and getting out of bed is physically, mentally, and emotionally painful.

2. Choosing a major.

I didn't decide my nursing major until I had already taken a full year of business school. It's fine.

3. Changing your major

I applied to school for nursing, changed to engineering, then to economics, then to nursing again. First/Fourth time's the charm.

4. Midterms

It's like if you were in the middle of a really difficult marathon and when you got to the middle they made you do 100 push-ups before you could keep going.

5. Finals

Keep imagining that marathon, but after making it through all those push-ups with the running and exhaustion, you have to prove that you made it through the whole marathon by carrying someone on your back and showing them the course you just ran.

6. Any tests at all, really.

Yeah.

7. Campus Squirrels

If your campus has a squirrel problem, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. They have no fear.

8. Group Projects

Okay, the issue with these is that you are either going to shoulder the entirety of this project and do work by yourself that was meant for multiple people, or you're going to divvy up the assignment and put a large portion of your grade in the hands of others. Scary.

9. Checking your bank account balance

Have you ever checked your back account after a week of buying textbooks, going out to eat, and treat yo' self? Don't.

10. Checking your grades

Along the same lines as checking your bank account, but this one determines your future. No big deal.

11. Telling your parents the state of your grades or bank account balance

As if the personal shame and disappointment of these wasn't enough, if you are in a position where you have to inform your parents of your state of affairs, then R.I.P.

12. Family gatherings

The questions, so many questions. You thought they would end when you picked a college, but boy were you wrong. Do you have a job lined up? Are you ready to settle down? That'll put a chill in your bones.

13. Answering personal life questions at family gatherings

They primarily center around your love life, but can range from anything like what classes you're taking, to where you see yourself in 10 years. Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

14. Significant other’s family gatherings

The make your hair stand up on the back of your neck, white knuckle, glistening with sweat kind of fear that keeps you awake at night.

15. Having a significant other.

Because commitment.

16. Not having a significant other.

Because alone.

17. Debt

I don't know, but have you looked at college tuition recently?

18. The upcoming presidential election.

The real American Horror Story.

19. Interviews

Just like a regular conversation except it has to be the best conversation you've ever had, every time, if you want to be employed.

20. Talking on the phone.

Somehow this seems to be a much bigger problem for our generation, but speaking to someone else without seeing them, especially people you've never spoken to before can be enough to make you hide under the bed.

21. Merging during rush hour.

Just me?

23. Adulthood.

Our prior schooling did not prepare us for this!

24. Life.

Basically.

So give us your best, Halloween, but I think we've been a little desensitized from the old ghosts and goblins. It's going to take a little more, like student loans, to scare us.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
