The time has finally come and just like that The Olympics 2016 is over. An amazing two weeks flew by and we now have to wait another 4 years until we get to experience The Summer Olympics once again. This year was filled with incredible talent and it was so much fun to watch different events. I personally love when The Olympics roll around, summer or winter. I think it's remarkable that so many people from so many countries and walks of life come together for two weeks to compete with one another. My family is also big on the Olympics; my mom gets so into the games that you would think I was out there competing. There were many moments during the Rio games that captured my heart and the hearts of people around the world.
First and foremost, the United States Gymnastic teams. The men and women competing in these events are absolutely astounding. From the talent with the floor routines to my favorite, the uneven bars, I was in awe watching these teams perform.
Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman were the veterans that everyone knew and were excited to watch perform, and they did not let down. Aly's floor routine was nothing short of impeccable and Gabby killed it with the uneven bars. Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian made sure to make a name for themselves this year with everything they did. And finally, superstar Simone Biles was the name everyone was talking about. These girls absolutely rock.
But let's not forget about these heartthrobs. Their determination, muscles, and teamwork stole the hearts of everyone. The things these men did, their pure strength, made my jaw drop. From the bar to the rings, these guys were captivating. I could not look away from their performance because I did not want to miss a beat.
Another event that captures a lot of people, including myself, is running. Usain Bolt, of course, dominated pretty much everything he did and it was amazing to see someone that fast. Some smaller moments captured my attention as well. This Nike commercial, that aired during The Olympics, is something everyone needs to see. It is an inspiring story of Chris Mosier and how he is the first open transgender athlete to earn a spot on the men's national team.
One of my favorite moments of these games came during a race. USA's Abbey D'Agostino and New Zealand's Nikki Hamblin had an unfortunate run in with each other which resulted in the two falling. They both stopped, Hamblin helped D'Agostino back to her feet and they finished the race together. This is what the Olympics are about, coming together.
Finally, the sport that everyone has been talking about: swimming. A big shout out to Katie Ledecky who totally kicked ass. She didn't just break the world record (set by herself I might add), but she completely shattered it. My favorite picture from the games: Ledecky winning with no one else even in the shot yet.
, Of course, the powerhouse that is Michael Phelps did not disappoint. Racking up his medal count to 28 total medals and 23 gold medals, he might just be the greatest Olympian of all time. He is addicting to watch and makes swimming all those laps look so effortless. Not only is he an amazing athlete, but he is a great family man which makes our hearts melt. Boomer and his gorgeous fiancee are so cute in the stands that we wish we were there with them. The only thing better than watching him win was reading all the hilarious tweets about him and the cupping marks all over his back.
Watching the men's relay team was by far my favorite event to watch. That is partially because I think I am now in love with Nathan Adrian (call me), but it is also because they swim so beautifully. Seeing Ryan Held cry on the podium made my heart skip a beat. It was so touching seeing him get emotional about his gold medal (as he should) and his teammates there to support him. But, my favorite Olympic moment involved Cody Miller. He first captured my attention with his long hair and charming smile, but what made me love him even more was his story. He told the world about his struggles as a child with an inverted chest and how swimming not only helped him but changed him. He never gave up and now he is a freakin' Olympic medalist. My favorite moment out of the two weeks of games was this. Adam Peaty from England won the gold medal but it was Cody Miller who celebrated hard. He won the bronze medal and was absolutely pumped. It was so cool seeing an athlete get excited over something that wasn't gold. I see a lot of silver and bronze medalist bummed because they think they "lost", but Miller knew that a bronze medal is a huge accomplishment and was so proud of himself, as he should be. So shoutout to you, Cody Miller, I hope you're still celebrating your win.
All in all, The Olympics were a huge success this year. The United States dominated the medal count, we got to see the end of a swimming era, a new gymnastics one, some really inspiring commercials, and people came together no matter what else is happening in the world. I don't know what was better to watch, all of the amazing athletes or Aly Raisman's parents (mine would be the same way).Thank you for hosting, Rio. See you in four years.
