With the start of a new year, schools of music are flooded with students wanting to pursue music as a career, myself included. We think that we are some of the hardest working majors on campus, while others just think that we "just sing/play." If you ever run into a music major, you should just give them a hug because we're always on the verge of an emotional breakdown. Majoring in music is a lifestyle! It's not only what you do inside of the classroom that matters, but also what we do outside outside as well. Along with all the stress we endure, there are always those people out there who will try to belittle what we do. To those people, I would challenge them to walk in the shoes of a music major for a week and see how it goes. I wanted to share some of our collective thoughts, so I surveyed some of my colleagues, and here are 18 things music majors are tired of hearing:

1. "You're a singer? Sing right now!"

2. "Pachelbel? Oh, I thought you said 'Taco Bell!'"

3. "Music? That must be so easy!"

4. "You sing opera? OMG! 'Phantom of the Opera' is my favorite!"

5. "Wait . . . Do music majors even have exams?"

6. "When will you graduate?

7. "Have you thought about auditioning for 'American Idol'?"

8. "This should be your top priority."

9. "It's going to be hard to find a job. I hope you have something to fall back on."

10. "All conductors do is wave their hands anyway."

11. "Piano is an actual class for you? That's so easy!"

12. "You're a percussion major? You must love the movie 'Drumline'!"

13. "You're in an A Cappella Group? So 'Pitch Perfect' must be your life!"

14. "Why are you a senior in GEC courses?"

15. "Can you sing/play for my cousin's wedding? They can't pay you, but you might get a piece of cake."

16. "Let's go to a music festival. You'll love it since you're a musician."

17. "Pentatonix is the best A Cappella ever!"

18. "Taking 14 hours is SO stressful."

At the end of the day you can't deny that music majors are hard-working and no one can do what we do!
