16 Thoughts I Had At My First College Football Game

From a girl who thought halftime was called intermission

16 Thoughts I Had At My First College Football Game
Lucy Bedewi

I can't throw a baseball in a straight line, I learned what an interception was just last fall and I still don't know what "off sides" means in soccer. But a few weeks ago, I went to my school's first home football game of the season and though I had no idea what was happening on the field most of the time, I still had a lot of fun. If you're anything like me, you've probably had these thoughts at a game too:

1. Cool, free shirts!

There are free shirts at like every sporting event. To be honest, it's one of the few reasons I actually go to games now.

2. Wow this stadium is huge

It was very overwhelming stepping out and seeing the huge field, millions of seats, and people rushing all around.

3. It is super packed, do all these people even go here?

I always seem to forget just how large my school is, and it’s impressive how we are able to squeeze all these students in one section.

4. But we got close seats...

We were pretty close to the field which seemed cool but...

5. ...I think? What even is a "good seat"

All I could see was the end-zone (I learned what it was called later). Good thing I didn't actually want to watch the game. Looking around, I couldn't tell where the best spot was, it seemed like you were going to miss something no matter where you sat.

6. I had no idea this much red existed

Or how many ways you could wear the Maryland flag. There is never a lack of spirit wear for big schools.

7. Why are there 3 different groups of cheerleaders?

There's a poms team, a cheer squad, a color guard, our school mascot doing pushups, you name it. There's always something to watch besides the game.

8. The marching band sounds amazing

Finally, my people have arrived! The marching band was definitely my favorite part of the game.

9. Ok now we're standing on the bleachers

And we don't sit until halftime, which is very exhausting.

10. Wait it started?

All of the sudden I saw a football fly through the air and people running on the field. I was expecting something a little more dramatic to kick it off.

11. Which way is our team supposed to go?

It is impossible to tell. I kept asking people around me, and I'm sure they got very annoyed with me.

12. Why is everyone jiggling their keys?

This is a distraction tactic apparently, though I would've thought something louder would work better.

13. Everyone's cheering... What happened? Oh, touchdown, got it

Cue the fireworks, fight song, Testudo pushups, and a whole lot of cheering.

14. Where did the entire student section go after halftime?

The tailgate beer usually wears off by the time the marching band goes on the field, thus concluding the football game more most students.

15. I still have no idea what's going on on the field, but this is still kinda fun

There's a ton to do from socializing to watching different performing groups to eating funnel cakes. I was never bored during the game.

16. My school has the best spirit

From our student section to our state flag to our school's traditions, our school is definitely the best!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
