It seems the Summer Olympics keep getting better and better over the past few games. However, I truly do not see how any Summer Olympics will beat this year's. I have been glued to my television for the first half of this year's Olympics. I thought no other Olympics would beat the London 2012 Olympics, but I was wrong. Here's a list of the top 16 reasons why these Summer 2016 Olympics are unbeatable:
1. Giselle's final catwalk.
This greatness began from Day 1's Opening Ceremonies. I mean did you see Giselle's catwalk? It seemed like it was lasting eternity, but she rocked every bit of it. Let alone, just having Giselle, one of the world's top super models, make an appearance definitely topped my list as to why these Olympics are so great.
2. The refugee team.
This year was the first year ever to have an Olympic Refugee Team. It was about time a team was created for those who had to flee their homeland for whatever reason.
3. Team Tonga's flag bearer.
OK
if he competed in every Olympic Event.4. Lily King calling out Yulia Efimova.
Who doesn't like a little drama, especially, when the drama is between two of the world's top swimmers. With the recent doping scandal surrounding Yulia Efimova, Lily King was not shy in criticizing Efimova for doping or sharing her dislike of the athlete.
5. USA's 98.04 dive.
Michael Hixon and Sam Dorman climbed the ranks from 7th place to 2nd place in only two rounds. Their final dive of 98.04 led to a silver medal. Yeah 98.04 is a great score, but it is an even better score since the two Americans had a nearly five minute wait while the Mexico team was asking for a redo before it was actually go time.
6. Michael Phelps broke a record... AGAIN.
Michael Phelps has proven to be the greatest Olympian multiple times over these past four Olympics. When Phelps won the 200-meter individual medley he officially stole the title as the greatest athlete of the games from Leonidas of Rhodes. Now, Rhodes' title go all the way back to 152 BC, so basically, Phelps broke a 2000 year old record.
7. Two gruesome injuries.
Unfortunately, there have already been two extremely graphic injuries in this year's games. It is not too often where you see a professional athlete injure themselves in a way where it makes you want to cringe, but only halfway through, two athletes have already suffered some pretty gruesome injuries: one with French gymnast Samir Ait Said and the other with Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan.
8. Water in diving pool turning green - have yet to figure out why.
How often do you see swimming pools turn green? Not very. So when the diving pool turned a bright green, it definitely was something that will not be forgotten easily. Still, today, there is no exact explanation for the greenness of the pool.
9. Simone Biles - officially titled world's best gymnast.
Coming into this year's games, there was much talk surrounding 19-year-old Simone Biles. Once it was finally her time to shine, Biles did just that - officially taking the gold medal in the women's individual all-around and being crowned the world's best gymnast.
10. Michael Phelps mean mugging.
This is probably one of my favorite photos of the Rio Olympics. Many articles say in the call room Michael Phelps was mean mugging rival Chad Le Clos. Honestly though, it seems as if that is just his game face as he is trying to get in the zone. Either way, Phelps' face called for a great photo-op.
11. Katie Ledecky winning four gold medals.
Katie Ledecky is definitely one to keep an eye out for in the future. Within the first seven days of competition at the Rio Olympics, Ledecky won four gold and one silver while creating history in the pool. For her 800m freestyle final, Ledecky broke her own world record. I think I have a new favorite athlete in the Summer Olympics.
12. North Korean and South Korean gymnast selfie.
Now come on, does this photo even need an explanation?
13. Simone Manuel first African American to win individual medal in swimming for U.S.
The Rio Olympics has two American Simone's kicking butt in their events. Simone Manuel became the first African American woman to win an individual event in Olympic swimming, while at the same time set an Olympic record of 52.70 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle event.
14. Golf coming back for first time in 112 years.
For the first time since 1904, golf made a comeback as an Olympic sport.
15. First time ever hosted in South American country.
I find this fact incredibly cool because it just shows how great the Olympic games, in general, are. The Olympic committee likes to keep things interesting by bouncing the Olympic events all around the world rather than remaining in one place.
