There is much to say as to why the Olympics are a milestone that many across the world deem important to embrace every two years. Bringing together countries all around the globe with the premonition of unity, creating a community of admiration and respect for both teammates as well as fellow competitors and celebrating triumphs and victories and applauding the accomplishments of many.
The 2016 Rio Summer Games fostered that very sense of community among the thousands of athletes that competed throughout the 17 days and hundreds of events. Fostering such an important message during a time of struggles both nationally and internationally.
During his address at the Opening Ceremony,Thomas Bach, International Olympic Committee's (IOC) President, spoke upon current events that have been taken notice by news coverage and gave an Olympic response for all.
“We are living in a world of crisis, mistrust, and uncertainty,” Bach addressed the audience. “Here is our Olympic answer: the 10,000 best athletes in the world competing with each other at the same time living peacefully together in one Olympic village sharing their meals and their emotions.”
The 10,000 best athletes all with different backgrounds from different countries. All embracing the honor to compete for their country in hopes of achieving success, but most importantly competing at their best as they carry out their long, hard-worked dream. Personal success they all have reached with the accomplishment of being attendance as well as in competition.
"In this Olympic world, there is one universal law for everybody. In this Olympic world, we are all equal. In this Olympic world, we see that the values of our share humanity are stronger than the forces which want to divide us," Bach continues. "So I call upon you, the Olympic athletes, respect yourself, respect each other, respect the Olympic values, which make the Olympic games unique for you and for the entire world."
A great experience was promised, but that experience also came with controversies and troubles. The Games could not escape environmental concerns, like water pollution and the Zika virus, or conflicts regarding athletes such as Russia's use of enhancements and Ryan Lochte's allegation of being robbed at gun point. The controversy of having the freedom not doing something such as a hand over the heart. All just a few of the many struggles that were faced.
Although it was not smooth sailing for the 31 Olympiad, "a new world" was created as the slogan for the Olympic Games signified. When the slogan was first introduced Bach told those in attendance, “It is what the Olympic movement is all about.” Making the world better was the Olympics promise of 2016.
Despite several downs, there were plenty of ups. Records were broken, history was made and dreams were achieved. These Olympics saw the finishing careers of decorated and accomplished Olympians as well as beloved coaches. These Olympics welcomed promising athletes of the future games. Some gold medal streaks continue while others were defeated. Memories were made as stories were formed.
As the first to host the Olympic Games in South America, Rio came through on its promise of creating a great experience. As the Olympics are at a close, the smiles of many will continue until the next time.
