While there are downsides to dating in college, it can be one of the best experiences in your life. You'll get endless advice from friends, have late night emotional heart to hearts, bond with your mum and the keeps going. But one of the biggest struggles in college is learning the difference between the multiple male species that you meet. So, in remembrance of our struggles, here is a list of 13 guys that you may encounter during your college years.
1. Not Your Usual Type
Maybe you’re into macho weight lifters, or your type is normal into guys who listen to music and like wearing plaid shirts. Either way, this guy is the complete opposite of your usual type.
2. The Adult
He’s 26, in grad school and has a job. Most of his friends are engaged or married. Meanwhile, you’re wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into while doing your biology homework.
3. The Slime-Ball
Looking back, you wonder why you were even attracted to him the first place. He’s notoriously known for charming girls, acting like he cares and never talking to them again. Regardless of the warning signs, you jumped into the fire. It’s okay, every girl goes through the bad boy phase. But make sure it’s a phase.
4. The Flirt
He’s dreamy, probably speaks French or Spanish fluently and just walked out of an Abercrombie and Fitch catalog. But you know that he’s too good looking for you to actually date him. You also are not sure whether he thinks you’re cute or super flirty and nice to everyone—including the lunch lady.
5. The Mattress
You know three of your sorority sisters who have had a thing with this guy, and that's not including one of your best friends during freshman year. He wasn’t a mistake necessarily, but let’s say never again?
6. The Awkward Encounter
You never talk to this person sober. It’s just awkward.
7. The Gym Rat
This one is difficult. He’s pretty normal and, to a certain point, you love his enthusiasm about health and fitness. It becomes a whole other story when he asks you to dinner and then decides that he would drink his protein shake and eat his meal right after his workout so that he wouldn't lose his gains. Have fun awkwardly eating alone during your “dinner date.”
8. The Foreign One
He's exotic. His accent makes you melt every time he speaks, smiles, walks, breathes or moves. But he is a one time thing—more like a vacation.
9. The One Who's In The Closet
He’s a blast to hang out with. He does all the romantic things that you would want your boyfriend to do: lets you dance on his feet, has candles lit up before you arrive and plays with your hair. If Ryan Gosling did it in a Nicholas Sparks movie, this guy is doing it. Unfortunately, somewhere deep down you know something is off—even if you don’t want to admit it. In fact, you may not even consciously notice it until your best friends tell you he’s definitely not straight.
10. The Friend-Zoned One
It happens to both girls and guys. Accept it and move on. Let it go.
11. The One Who Got Away
Self explanatory. You screwed up. Accept that you were a horrible person back then.
12. The Friend
You nearly dated him. Very nearly. There’s definitely attraction on both ends, but timing just didn’t seem to work out. You keep in touch, have fun together and talk about each other’s significant other. But, he'll stay a great friend that you can trust—sometimes.
13. Then, There's Him
He’s not quite perfect, but he is perfect at the same time. He makes you feel as if you’re home even when you’re miles away from it. He feeds you, challenges you and exposes you to new things that you would have never experienced if it weren’t for him. He supports you and makes you feel safe and loved. Even when you just couldn’t hold on any longer and when you felt like everything was falling apart, he stopped and listened to you. Then he hugged you as tightly as possible and helped you pick up the pieces. It’s not always easy, but it feels comfortable and natural.
Sometimes we doubt something because it’s not easy, but love isn’t suppose to be easy. Love isn’t fleeting, it’s always there. You love him when you hate him, you love him when he’s annoying and you love him when he makes you sad. You don’t know why because it's illogical, irrational and confusing. But that's what makes it love. For the first time, you put another person first. For the first time something that makes no logical sense at all or that makes you frightened, confused and worried makes you so incredibly warm.
