I moved to Texas my sophomore year of high school. Because of this, I was instantly immersed in the Texan culture without even a crash course about the unique state Texas is. Even though it's part of America, it has many differences from the rest of the country. Whether you're moving to or just visiting Texas, there's many questions you're going to end up asking about this crazy, amazing culture!
1. Why does everyone take football so seriously?
Football isn't a sport here. It's a lifestyle. It consumes every weekend. It's the highlight of everyone's week.
2. What the heck are mums?
They're just these huge decorative mums covered with anything you can imagine: ribbons, teddy bears, flashing lights. You name it, it's on there. And the bigger, the better. I mean, it is Texas after all.
3. Why were Texans so distraught over the Blue Bell thing?
I had never had Blue Bell until I moved here. But I learned pretty quickly that if it isn't Blue Bell, it isn't ice cream. There just isn't any other kind in Texas. So when it was taken off of the shelves, that meant Texans had to go without ice cream. Or worse, try another brand...
4. What's so special about Whataburger?
Oh, let me tell you. There isn't an occasion where Whataburger isn't appropriate. 2 a.m. munchie run? Whataburger. Graduation dinner? Whataburger it is. First date? I'd pick Whataburger. I mean, c'mon. That burger is perfect. And don't get me started on the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit.
5. Is y'all really a word?
Yes, yes it is. I still haven't gotten used to using it, so I still say "you guys" and I get the strangest looks. And don't forget "Fixin' to."
6. Is everything really bigger in Texas?
Yes. Texas is just super-sized everywhere. Our food, the state itself, football games, everything is bigger in Texas.
7. Do you really ride horses to school?
Only on Fridays. I'm just kidding. But you will see an abnormal amount of pickup trucks in the parking lot.
8. Do you guys drink anything other than sweet tea and Dr. Pepper?
Not really.
9. How long does it take to get from one side of Texas to the other?
About 12 hours. I wish I was kidding. Texas is absolutely massive.
10. What are those blue flowers everyone takes pictures in?
Those are bluebonnets. They're the state flower, and everyone's go-to for pictures.
11. Is everything Texas shaped?
I mean, pretty much. Waffles just taste better when they're shaped like Texas.
12. Why are Texans so proud to be Texan?
Because Texas is just an all -around amazing state full of polite and kind-hearted people. The culture and tradition here is outstanding, and so much fun to be living in. Between the food, the people, and the atmosphere, I'm proud to be a Texan!
