Some questions and sentences just get so old to us volleyball players after hearing them so many times. Will it ever end? If you're a volleyball player, you'll most likely be able to relate to all or most of these:
1. "Why does that player have a different colored jersey?"
They're the libero. I'd explain it more in depth to you, but it would probably take you about ten minutes to understand.
2. "Get on the line."
I'll take a hard pass on those sprints, thanks.
3. "Are you a bumper or a spiker?"
I am neither, because no one above the age of ten uses those terms anymore. Please catch up.
4. "You're reffing this match."
Okay, now which one of us is going to be stuck doing book?
5. "Your shorts are so tight and short."
Firstly, they're called spandex. Secondly, all volleyball players wear them. Get over it.
6. "How can you play volleyball if you're not tall?"
Volleyball has multiple positions for all girls of varying heights, and I already know I'm short. I don't need a reminder.
7. "Wow, you're so tall, do you play basketball?"
A tall person does not automatically equal a basketball player.
8. "Your legs are so buff/huge."
This is a bittersweet comment because on one side, it's always appreciated when someone notices the results of all my hard work. On the other side, I'm reminded of how big my legs are every time I try to squeeze into a pair of jeans.
9. "You're always at volleyball."
Between school volleyball, club volleyball, and sand volleyball, free time doesn't exist. Don't even get me started on when you get to college volleyball.
10. "Volleyball is easy."
Just because you were above average last time you played a casual volleyball game at a graduation party does not mean that you are good at volleyball. Try digging a ball coming at you at 65 miles per hour, and then come talk to me.
All jokes aside, I really am blessed to have the game of volleyball in my life. I'll listen to these questions and statements a hundred times more if that's what comes with being a volleyball player.
