It’s three in the morning, no one is awake and you need pizza, Conrad’s really anything, but you don’t want to get it alone. Even though ordering food just means googling the number and calling, you don’t want to have to wait for the delivery person by yourself. By some miracle, your roommate is up and so is your other best friend down the hall. They won’t admit it, but you know they sensed your longing for them.
As you’re waiting for your food, you decide to blow up some guy’s phone. You think that sneaking into the bathroom and doing it will work, but you can’t get anything past these two. They find you in the bathroom, with tears and a runny nose because he didn’t answer. They distract you with your food that’s arrived and they’ve selflessly paid for. They won’t remind you they paid because they know you bought them Starbs last week.
They eat with you, laugh with you and don’t let you eat anything that has gluten in it because even though you don’t care right now, they don’t want you to get sick and they know you’ll hate yourself tomorrow. You go to bed full, happy and loved, and you have no one other than them to thank. You can’t thank the guy who didn’t answer or the food or the delivery person because without your best friends, you would be crying, alone, hungry and miserable.
Thank you best friends, thank you for the nights like these and for:
1. Never letting me eat alone/buying me food and Starbucks even when I don’t ask for it
2. Making me go to class
3. Letting me skip class when I really don’t want to go
4. Taking mid-day naps with me
5. Driving me to work/class
6. Visiting me while I’m at work
7. Always going out with me
8. Listening to me talk about how much I miss my cat
9. Living with me
10. Putting up with my bizarre mood swings and still cuddling with me at the end of the day
The list goes on and on, but these are things we tend to take for granted with those friends that we call “our people.” I’m sure you’ve questioned why they put up with you and vice versa, but it doesn’t matter. What matters is you’re sharing this beautiful thing called life with them, day in and day out. All they care about is you and all you care about is them.
They’re the peanut butter to your jelly. They’re the chaser to your shot. They’re the dairy free creamer to your coffee. They’re your people and they’re yours.
Thank you to all of the best friends out there, you people rock.
