There are still reasons to celebrate

10 Things That Are Better Than The Election Results

So as most of you may know, America has elected Donald Trump to become the 45th President of the United States. Some people viewed it as a sign of celebration, whereas others viewed it as the end of America. Regardless of where you stand politically, we are citizens of a country where we are blessed with pleasures no one else in the world can have. Not only that, we are continuing to fight for the rights of others such as women’s rights, LGBTQ, disability, mental health, race, religion, beliefs etc. The fight of the nation will be a long and hard battle, but there is always a reason to celebrate even in the worst of times. Just because we are all verbally attacking each other does not mean we should overlook the little things that make this country so great. So, as an attempt to make you smile through hard times, I have compiled a list of 10 things that make America stick out above the rest. Enjoy!

1. Wendy’s Frosty and French Fries.

Salty and sweet do in fact mix. Nothing beats the perfect malt beverage with greasy fries covered in sea salt. Good luck finding this somewhere else in the world.

2. Baseball: The Cubs won the World Series after 108 years.

Whether you are a baseball fan or not, this is a reason to celebrate. Name me one country that has sports fans so dedicated that generations have died, passing on the legacy of hope and passion for a sport, for 108 years. I don’t see people getting this excited over cricket, do you?

3. Gay marriage is finally legal in the United States.

Just because you love someone of different or similar gender, does not mean you should be deprived of who you love. Love is love and I am so happy for friends and family that are finally privileged enough to say “I Do” to the one they love; I am so happy for you. You are now a part of history and that is something worth celebrating.

4. You live in a country with running and clean water.

Some countries in the world are so poor that they can’t even afford or provide clean water. For some, they have watched their loved ones die to the bacteria and diseases in water. However, you, the one reading this, are blessed enough to drink a healthy glass whenever you please.

5. You are free because of the brave.

We are privileged with freedom because of the hard work and sacrifices made by men and women every day. They may not know every individual person in America, but we recognize every single one of them.

6. Back-to-Back World War Champs.

Not to sound cocky, but we are the greatest because we have won two world wars. With hard work, dedication, family and passion, America has not only won WWI and WWII, but they established freedom in the process. We are where we are because of that victory. Be dang proud of that.

7. McDonald's and Coke.

Nothing is better than having only $3 in your pocket and knowing you can eat like royalty at your nearest McDonald's. It may not be a fancy meal, but man do you feel stuffed afterwards. Name another country that has a McDonald's on every other block…didn’t think so.

8. We have many different accents in the same language.

America is huge! You have the South, the North, the Midwest, the West Coast, the East Coast, etc. wherever you classify yourself, we all generally speak the same language. You may speak like you have hot potatoes in your mouth, (hi southerners), you may talk through your nose (what’s up Northerners) and you may even talk as if you just ruined your meal with an overabundance of kale (how’s it going West Coast?). Regardless of what part of America we live in, it is what makes us so uniquely different than the rest.

9. We landed on the moon.

Not to brag, but America not only has won both World Wars, but it is the first country to have set someone to the moon. We literally beat Russia to the next frontier. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”- Neil Armstrong

10. Just because we are Americans doesn't mean no one else should be.

America the beautiful is a land where dreams are an equal opportunity to anyone. All we ask is that you come into the country legally, just like every other American, and that dream can be yours. Whether it is a business, a restaurant or owning a simple newspaper stand, the dreams we hold is what created the American dream. Now, for those reading this, look at what we are doing. Yeah, the world may or may not be happy that Trump is the president. I get that. However, that gives you no right to threaten someone, who is just as American as you regardless of color, race, religion or beliefs. "We come together, in order to form a more perfect union..." No matter what happens, we have a strong bond as a country. Don't forget that.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
