We've all watched Grey's Anatomy, but if you're like me, you've watched it maybe four too many times. In going back and re-watching, I've caught on to some things I never noticed the first time and I've learned new lessons each time, including (most) everything I need to know about love.
1. If I've learned one thing, it's that you should never have to beg someone to stay in your life. You should never have to beg someone to love you and you should never have to convince someone why they should pick you. They should want to do that all on their own and if they don't, you walk away and don't look back.
2. You may think that the tall, dark and handsome guy you are obsessing over right now is the love of your life, but that doesn't mean you put him first. You have a future, you have a life and no boy will ever trump that. Above all, think of yourself first.
3. You can love someone with your whole being and with everything you've got, but you can never make someone want you as much as you want them. There will come a day when you meet a man who loves you with his whole heart, unconditionally and unapologetically. Wait for him.
4. Loving someone should be easy and it should be simple. There are so many mediocre things in life, but love should NOT be one of them.
5. With love comes loss and as bad as it hurts right now, one day it won't. It may not be tomorrow or the next day, but one day you are going to wake up and the sun will still be shining and it won't hurt anymore and sometimes that's all you need to make it through the day.
6. Not everything is going to be sunshine and rainbows. It's going to be complicated, it's going to be hard. There are going to be arguments and little fights and sometimes big fights, but it's what you do after those fights that makes it count and makes it all worth it.
7. You deserve the world and no one should ever tell you different. You deserve to be happy and to be loved endlessly, every day. You deserve to find your person and have them love you just as much as you love them and you should never apologize for wanting that. If someone isn't treating you how you DESERVE to be treated, leave.
8. Fight for what you want and don't give up. If you want something to work bad enough, you have got to fight for it. One day that may be gone and nothing is more true than not realizing what you have until it's gone. You can't give up. Fight for them and fight for love because one night, it'll hit you. It'll hit you that you could have tried harder, you could have loved better, you could have done it all better. Don't wait until that point comes, do it now. Take it from me and do it now.
9. Even if you're scared it may be the wrong thing to do, tell them you love them. Whenever you get the chance, remind them how much you care and how they're loved. You never know when it's going to be the last time. The last thing you want to do is regret not telling them and regret not reminding them just how much they mean to you.
10. When it's all said and done, when there's nothing left to give and nothing left to fight for, you move on. You accept the fact that it's over and you go on with your life. As great of a love as it was, if it didn't work, you have to realize that there is someone out there that is right for you and someone that won't stop loving you. Someone that won't give up and that's what you have to wait for. You'll find your person, you'll find your moon when you're the sun and you'll find the one that makes all of this worth it. So you move on, the memories will hurt because it was real and it meant something, but you can't find your person holding on to the past.
Each love is different and not everything is textbook, but that's what makes it unique. If you're lucky enough to find that person that makes you feel like the best person in the world and someone that makes your days go by easier, keep them around. Fight for them. Love them and love yourself. "At the end of the day, when it comes down to it, all we really want is to be close to somebody."
