Going to school in New York has been an experience. Growing up in a small town in Connecticut is much different than where my friends grew up in New York. We constantly joke and argue about how to say certain words, sports teams, and even pizza places. Living in New York the past few months has taught me that I am most definitely not a New Yorker, but I am a true nutmeggar (as we like to call it in Connecticut).
1. Your favorite baseball team is the Boston Red Sox.
Hate to break it to all you Yankee fans, but there’s nothing better than Boston pride. We love the big green monster, and our favorite song is Sweet Caroline. I bet you even join in on the buh-buh-buhs when you hear the song!
2. Your favorite pizza place is Pepe’s.
What even is Little Vincent’s or Ray’s?! We’d much rather wait hours in line for Pepe’s famous pizza in New Haven
3. It’s Ree-seas, not Reese-is.
And yes, pee-seas does rhyme with Ree-seas!
4. You’ve only been on the train once.
And that one time was when you were at school, or when you had to see the tree at Christmas time
5. You’ve only been to the city a handful of times.
Once for your tenth birthday where you did every tourist attraction ever (let’s not forget the American Girl Place!) and on school trips
6. You know what L.L. Bean is.
Your first backpack was from here, and you used it for years. Every girl wears the moccasins and the bean boots. You better order them in August so you’re not waiting until April to get them
7. A hero is a person, not a sandwich.
But really, who knew eating a sandwich is a heroic experience?! The only heroes I know of are people!
8. You don’t have an accent.
You don’t say “Lawng Island”, “cray-on”, or “da Bronx”. It’s “Long Island”, “cran”, and “the Bronx”
9. There are no cabs where you live.
No towns are that busy where you can’t drive through them in your car, and you’ve definitely never had a cab company’s number saved in your phone
10. You don’t know what “The Island” is.
I’m not from The Island, and I’ve never been to The Island, but apparently it’s almost as great as Disney World the way New Yorkers talk about it
Living in New York is great and it may be “the city that never sleeps”, but I wouldn’t change where I’m from for anything.
