CALM down, 5 Seconds of Summer’s new album is here

It was a nice surprise to everyone in quarantine when 5 Seconds of Summer released their album CALM on March 27, 2020. The album is full of familiar singles, along with some nostalgic tunes that will make everyone feel like dancing around their room all night long.

Beginning with the track Red Desert, a mood for the album is set. Reminiscent of indie tones, Red Desert features perfect harmonies with the air of an oasis. Reflecting on an adventurous love and the deep feelings associated with it, the song balances the emotions beautifully with the smooth melodies. It is an easy listen that leaves a sense of wanting more.

Released in 2019 as a single, No Shame quickly emerged as a fan favorite. The song describes the act the musicians are forced to put on in front of the public while also describing a fickle love. The song also elaborates on the cliché of doing anything to get someone's attention and control held over them by this infatuation. While the lyrics at times send a mixed signal toward the meaning of the song, it is extremely upbeat and catchy. With one listen, you will have it stuck in your head for the rest of the week.

Released shortly before the rest of the album, Old Me serves as a nice reflection to the bands' past selves. Thanking themselves for persevering through the doubt, 5 Seconds of Summer created an anthem for people struggling with haters.

Easier is the perfect song for those who know the struggle of being in a relationship destined for failure. Dealing with the constant back and forth of a relationship, Easier begs the question: to stay or not to stay? Relationships are difficult and require a lot of effort and compromise. However, you can never really change your partner. Easier captures this reality and knows that ultimately the relationship is never going to work but they love their partner too much to give up.

Originally featured on the track list for Season 3 of 13 Reasons Why, Teeth deals with a relationship where one person is manipulating the other. Ever had the feeling that one person is a little more committed to the relationship? Well so does the person who wrote this song. A capricious lover that never fully commits to their partner and ends up leaving them to come crawling back every time. You know that you should give up on the relationship, but there is just something about them you can't give up. 5SOS nails this feeling in Teeth.

Wildflower is sure to put a little spring in your step. An upbeat song about a whirlwind romance, Wildflower is flawless. The quick pauses and chords create a fun atmosphere that is carried throughout the song. It a more lighthearted song compared to others on the album, which makes a perfect balancer.

Having to convince someone to you jump, I jump Jack is one familiar to most. Whether you are Jack or Rose in the scenario, relationships can sometimes take convincing. Best Years tells the story of trying to convince someone that you aren't like the rest and can give you the best years of your life. The subject in this song has clearly been hurt before and doesn't want to go through that hurt again. But hey, what life without a little risk?

Yet another song by 5SOS about being put in the friend (with benefits) zone. Not in the Same Way relishes in the toxic relationship of hooking up then being turned away. The feelings are clearly not mutual in the situation, one person caring a little more. But again, they can't seem to quit.

Lover of Mine contains some of 5SOS's most unique language out of all their songs. The language is very creative and leads seamlessly into the next lyric. Lover of Mine talks about how life can get in the way of relationships sometimes, but they are willing to put in the work. It is a lovely song that reveals the dedication the band has to their relationships.

Thin White Lies describes a heart broken person that thinks they are okay with the heart break. However, they want just one more taste of their love, but they know it is a lie. Their partner claims they love them, yet they don't act like it. Even knowing they are being used, the singer doesn't want to ask their lover anything they can't handle the answer to. It is a battle that can't be won.

Lonely Heart pretty much speaks for itself. An upbeat song that reveals the knowledge of heart break that is just beyond the horizon, Lonely Heart is very reminiscent of other 5SOS songs. This song while being catchy, was too familiar to be original.

The final track of the album leaves off on a high note. High talks about the changes someone goes through after a relationship ends and wanting to share that with their past partner. However, they know that it is useless because the relationship was not good, and they blame themselves for its failure. The band accompanied this situation with an easy melody that hits you right in the feels.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
