Spring break has finally arrived, and students everywhere are celebrating being doing with school. Not having homework leaves plenty of times for activities such as going on trips, staying home and watching Netflix, and most importantly of all, listening to great music. So much incredible music has come out in recent times, and spring break is the perfect time to catch up on all that has been released. Here are some more recent songs to listen to, whether you're on a 16-hour flight or laying on your bed for the entierty of break.
"The Moment" - Tame Impala
Sure, Tame Impala may have connotations of "stoner music," but many of their songs are upbeat enough to dance to. "The Moment" is a fantastic song off of their relatively recent album, "Currents," and it features trippy vocals from Kevin Parker and wonderfully catchy electronic drum beat—ideal for those road trips you plan on taking this spring break.
"Dope Cloud" - Protomartyr
I'll be honest, I didn't love this band the first time I heard them. I supposed the post-punk movement isn't for everyone–at least not at first. But give this band a chance. Dark themes found throughout their lyrics are channelled by the lead singer, Joe Casey of Detroit, MI. Both his mother and his father have gone through severe health issues, and growing up with those deeply impacted Joe.
The song "Dope Cloud" off of their 2015 album "The Agent Intellect" features some of their more upbeat guitar—fans of Parquet Courts will love this song.
"The Way You’ve Love Her: - Mac Demarco
Mac Demarco's chill vibes are perfect for your spring break plans. His music sort of has that beachy, sunny, frisbee in one hand and cheap beer in the other vibe. Check out his most recent release, a mini-album titled "Another One" here.
"Come Home Now" - Day Wave
No matter what people say on the debate on music streaming, I think it's hard to deny how much more music discovery is available through online streaming. Services such as IndieShuffle.com and Pandora allow people to hear new songs all of the time. I discovered this song when it came up on Spotify's Music Discovery Playlist. The chill vibes from this song are perfect for your spring break, and perhaps an inspiration to go search for more music to listen to, too.
"I Love You So" - The Walters
With influences ranging from the Beach Boys to Steely Dan, The Walters are probably (hopefully) the coolest band that is about to make it big. Their most recent EP, released December of last year, manages to incorporate early-'60s harmonies into their music while still sounding totally unique. If the lead singer's voice and swoon-worthy background vocals don't make your heart melt, then you probably don't have a heart. Check out their wonderful albeit unconventional and odd music video for "I Love You So," and check out their music here.
