Let’s face it. Whether we truly like to admit it or not, it’s difficult to keep up with that summer exercise routine. It’s easy to get sidetracked with days off from work, beach trips or even binge-watching Netflix with lots of ice cream. Those lists of “How to get a beach body in 10 days” and “The ultimate guide to better eating” seem to get piled up on your newsfeed .
Trust me, I know what it is like to get yourself curled up in your bed on your day off and not want to move, when you really should be working off that Wendy’s you ate for lunch. And after your work or your internship, the last thing you want to do is ditch the dress shoes for sneakers. Slippers and sweats are calling your name.
So, while you’re trying to stay fit and have fun this summer, here are some tips to keep that routine on track, and stay dedicated. Mind, body and health.
Keep yourself positive!
When you first wake up in the morning, what do you see? Beyoncé, obviously. More importantly, you want to see positive images and messages, and not models in tiny bikinis. Find things that keep you inspired, and hang them all over your wall — especially in the spots when you first wake up.
Tag-along (no not the Girl Scout cookies) with a friend.
We all have that one friend who works out regularly, without excuse. And as much as we may secretly envy that person, they may be our best asset. They're someone to motivate you, someone to do those pesky ab workouts with you, and more importantly, someone to keep you company. Two is better than one.
Join a class
Gym bulletin boards are the best places to look when it comes to finding a new and fun way to work out. Classes like Zumba, Soul Cycle and even boot camp, for the brave ones, are just a few ways to push yourself without being bored.
Just keep swimming, just keep swimming …
I hope every single one of you thought of "Finding Nemo" on this one. If not, shame on you. But in all seriousness, turn hang-out days at the pool into workout days. Doing laps in the pool can actually make you SWEAT. Not to mention, it' a perfect combination of cooling off on a hot, sunny day AND getting your whole core workout in.
Skip the ice cream.
As much as you would like to stuff your face with mint chocolate chip ice cream on an 85-degree day, don’t. Ice cream is thick, and contains a heck of a lot more calories then ice pops. Ice pops are nearly nothing, and you can enjoy about five, or even 10!
Beach runs = fun runs
Worried about gaining a few pounds on vacation? Feel embarrassed to run on the boardwalk with every tourist watching your back? Have no fear, the beach is near! Running on the beach is excellent for your feet and muscles, not to mention it you could get your whole family involved if you really wanted to.
I know it is hard to remember to exercise every day, but there are no excuses. It’s summer. You need to enjoy yourself, but stay dedicated. The results are worth it.
