As many of us are approaching the years of life where we discover ourselves, we begin to feel a sense of un-confidence and masking away our true selves. This comes from the fact that we are afraid of judgement, or what people define us as. When in reality, there is only one person in this world that can tell you who you are, and that one person is you.
Ever since I was young, I have constantly been shown that many things in life define us of who we are as a person. This includes the type of clothes you wear, how much money you have, where you grew up, the size of the house you have, the grades you get, etc. Since when did physical objects or certain aspects in our lives define who WE are? I believe that the truth behind who someone is branched from morals, personality, kindness and devotion. Just because someone doesn’t have the latest pair of Adidas shoes or the biggest house on the block, doesn’t mean they are not a decent human being. Our society has twisted our minds into believing that all these things define who we are when we have forgotten what truly does. And that is the decency and kindness of a person. I have seen way too many people spending $300 on a pair of shoes, yet have no clue how to treat a person with respect. I have also seen a person struggling to support their family by working 3 jobs, but have the kindest heart. This shows how wrong this world is, and how we need change now. We need to stop thinking that a letter grade in school defines us because I am emotionally exhausted from seeing my friends strain themselves because they believe a grade they get in a class defines who they truly are on the inside. A letter does not define you, and neither should it ever. Our society needs to stop spending time focusing on what brand of clothes we put on our bodies and spend more time focusing on what our bodies do for this world.
I believe our society is beautiful and amazing in its own way. I believe that with time, we can live in a world where we won’t be defined by the amount of money we have or our GPA in high school. We have always been defining people by these things, and maybe we should take a step back. Once we take a step back from this problem, we can realize the beauty in everyone in this world.
